The tin foil actually just acts as a conductor for the current to travel through the prongs inside the jack. The main problem, is a bad connection in one of the prongs. All the tin foil will ACTUALLY do, is split the current from the right speaker {or the working side} , to the other. It doesnt actually provide Stereo sound quality, it only divides the one current into both speakers. So all your actually getting, is the sound from one of the speakers, and not the sound you SHOULD be getting from the other... My observations have given me the idea that the flat-wide prongs in the back of the audio audio input arent fully connecting to the rings on the headphone jack. The reason, is that its been pushed in too far, and bent in that place. This usually happens when you rip out the headphone jack at a slight angle, or in a rough manner... When this happens, the prongs dont clamp around the end of the headphone jack on both ends, but only slightly on the bent side (which explains why you only hear a TINY amount of sound from the side that doesnt work). The solution.. Take a safety pin, and bend the tip with needle-nose pliers to make a tiny "L" shaped hook on the end of the pin, just wide enough to fit inside the jack. Use the end of the hook to pry underneath from the side of the wide prong, and use the levridge of the pin to lift it out a bit, a little further than where you want it to be. (it will need the extra lift to bend, allowing it to stay in place).. If that doesnt work, then its most definately going to be a bad connection in the main circuitboard of the device.. But as a bonus for the "Foil Believers", It DOES make the microphone on a set of earphones work, if it has one.. Im only 16, and I figured this out within a day.. :P Hope this helps!

I have the same problem too and I think warrenty might not fix it depending
on how you borne the headphone jack. I borke mind by letting my iPod go through the washing machine and I do not think that is covered in the warrenty.
sometimes though if your put a little pressure on the conectir it will work in
the left ear phone or at least for me it sometimes works.
