iMac Backlight not working after HDD replacement

I just upgraded the hard-drive in my iMac, but through it something must have gotten messed up in the display. I turn it on and there's the normal, grey screen with the apple, but when I try to go past that (whether it be a installation disk or the actual OS) the backlight turns off and I can only see what's on the screen using a flashlight. I was actually able to install mavericks only using the flashlight, but despite changing the brightness in settings nothing happens.

Also, if I wake it from sleep, the backlight works for half a second, then shuts back off again. I've already reset the PRAM and SMC.

Running Mavericks on older machines has proven to be "issue ridden". There's a known sleep wake issue (black screens, crashing/hanging). IMO Boot from your OEM install disks and reinstall that OS - forget about Mavericks there's little benefit to be had for you and in fact you're not going to be able to use some of the features anyway... Also you'll loose all your PowerPC apps (if you're still using any of those).

*This system fully supports the last version of OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion" and the current version of OS X 10.9 "Mavericks," except for Power Nap and AirPlay Mirroring functionality (which also requires an Apple TV 2nd Gen or later.

Please note that OS X "Lion" 10.7 and subsequent versions of OS X, like Mountain Lion and Mavericks, are not capable of running Mac OS X apps originally written for the PowerPC processor as these operating systems do not support the "Rosetta" environment. To run PowerPC applications on this Mac, it will be necessary to use Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard."
