Hangs during boot up and produce clicking sound

My netbook hangs during boot up (upon turning the power on) and then it produces a clikcing sound. A technical friend of mine said it may have something to do with its hard drive. My question is, given the worst-case-scenario that my hard drive is at fault, how can i possibly access my important files on it? Are there ways? Thank you.

The clicking is usually the hard drive search head going back and forth, indicative of a failing hard drive. Back up your data ASAP. If you can, get an external enclosure or a universal adapter to put your old drive in, install a new hard drive. Install some recovery software and see if you can recover your data.

If your display stays dark, it may also be some short-circuit. (However, harddisk is more likely) My son caused short-circuit to my Samsung NB28 by connecting phone charger to laptop LAN-port. After that my computer just clicked and lights went on and off after starting. Taking battery out, didn't help either.

I opened the laptop and connected the two tin-spots on circuit board, which had small text RST (means reset). After that my laptop started to boot again without clicking sound.

Boot problems like those mentioned were traced to a failed cd rom drive. Replacing the drive solved the boot problems. However, simply disconnecting the ROM drive did not.
