How can I tell if my hard drive is bad

so when i turn the computer on, i get the gray screen with the blinking folder with a question mark in its center. When i use the installation disk the computer recognizes it and boots up. However it doesn't seem like the computer is recognizing the same old hard drive its had since i bought it. on top of that i don't get the buzzing of the fan when the computer is turned on. secondly, there have been many times where the computer has made a "click" "click" click" sound. is my hard drive bad or is there some other problem with the computer?

thanks

Sounds like the HDD is bad, to check, hold option at startup and see if you can boot from the drive. You can get a new HDD here, installation instructions are linked. If you need to run Data Recovery if you have no backup, use DataRescue, it's great and I've used it myself to great effect.

'Once started from install disk run Tools-Disk Utility->Disk First Aid->repair disk'' it will tell you if the HD is damaged. (do not do an install) As long as you're there you may as well repair permissions (sometimes bad permissions can pooch a system).

The "click" sound makes me think the drive has failed. I have used both Disk Warrior and Tech Tool Pro in the past to try HD repairs. Like rab777hp said, hold down the option key when you power it on and boot from the CDROM. If you can get your drive working, back it up asap! You can make a bootable HD with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper, both shareware programs found online. Good luck!
