iPhone 5 compass does not calibrate or move.

I changed the screen a couple months ago, I replaced the non magnetic screw with a normal magnetic screw. I just noticed that the compass doesn't work at all. It's just frozen in one spot when trying to calibrate.

I didn't realize it for a few months, so I just removed the magnetized screw. Compass still does not work.

I've reset the phone and erased data etc. Still nothing.

Can I replace the compass? Any way to fix this?

I just figured this out. I removed the screw (top right) that holds down the shield that covers the flex cables to the lcd screen, I also removed the screw that is under it in the same location (it's the screw that has a screw hole in it).

After removing these screws everything works. I put 1 screw back (larger screw that has a second screw hole inside it) and it stopped working again. So I left the screw out and it works again fine. I am pretty sure that this screw has become magnetized by putting the other magnetized screw into it.

Sometimes its how tight the screw is as well, if you want you can try screwing it back in, and then gradually loosen the screw. This has worked for some.

I must have rearranged the screws after replacing the battery in my iPhone 5 because my compass stopped working. I went back into the phone after reading this post and I put the screws in their correct locations. Well, at least I though that I had. I also found out that a magnet attracted all of the screws so I used a magnetizer/demagnetizer (purchased at a hardware store) to demagnetize the screw at the top right. This solved the problem for a little while but the problem has now come back and the compass will not calibrate. I'll go back in and loosen the screw to see what that does. I'll post an update.

What is the update?

Just remove the screw that is in the too right and leave it out. The original screw is made of aluminum and therefore has no magnetism. If you do t have the original aluminum screw, just take it out.

I tried that and the compass is still stuck. It only points to North. I do not know what to do next.

I don't know anything about the screws on an iPhone 5 (I can't see any), but this solution worked fine for me:

You can also try changing the compass to use Magnetic North instead of True North. Go to Settings> Compass> then unselect use True North. This worked for me as I also had the same problem with my iphone 5

Well, this was one f the first things I tried and it did not work.

I have the exact same problem with my iphone 5s after replacing the battery. Not knowing that it matters, I used a "regular" magnetized Philips-Screwdriver which it seems has magnetized basically all screws and probably some more parts in there. I didn't even know, that the screws holding down the little shield on top of the screen connectors are different (one being made of aluminium, as it seems)

Now: I tried all of the above, including leaving screws out entirely -- no help, compass is totally stuck and can't be calibrated -- HELP!! Please!

One thought: I used to have (maybe still have) a demagnitizer for audio tape decks. Back then those were used to demaginitze the heads of cassette recorders for improved sound. Looks like a pen, with the tip being the demagnitizing end. Does ist sound like a good idea to use this on all the screws, the little metal plate and probably even in the phone (upper right corner)?

Thanks!!

I tried demagnetizing the screws and that did not work for me.

I just realized that in may case not only the compass is stuck, but that also the orientation sensors don't work. I.e. when I turn the phone into landscape mode the screen stays in portrait (and I can hardly watch youtube videos anymore...) -- how can this be related?!

I have the same problem, and it happened a couple of weeks ago after the latest iOS update! Motion & compass sensors do not work. Tried all above suggestions nothing is fixing this problem. All I did is update to latest iOS :(

I have the exact same problem after upgrading to ios 9. Now it is running 9.0.2 but I don't know if 9.0.0 and 9.0.1 work.
