My powermac 1.8 single processor- intermittent FAN NOISE

I bought this first generation computer and it failed after 2 years 9 months. Fortunately I had a warranty and they replaced "everything" 1 month before warranty expired.

There were 2 issues:

First: a loud fan noise - it would race, then stop.

Second: it would not start up proper and kept crashing.

After Apple replaced the logic board, it still started up crashing. So they replaced the motherboard and several other parts.

After replacements - smooth sailing for 4 years.

Now I am getting the intermittent fan noise again. Not sure which fan. Any suggestions? Wonder if this is the preview to crashing again....

I would run the Apple Hardware Test to determine what part may be failing. Usually on the system disk boot into the system disk by holding down the option key and selecting the AHT from the option list. Ralph

After 4 years it may need to be cleaned with some compressed air. These machines produce a lot of heat, (at least mine does) and I have to clean it out every six months. We get a lot of dust in West Texas. The main fans have a handle built into them and they just slide out. +

Wow it sounds like you just have a lot of back luck when it comes to this computer eh? Its like its cursed!!

Anyway, intermittent fan noise most likely means that some component of the Power Mac is getting very hot, so the fan needs to blow harder(TWSS) to cool down the hardware that is too hot.

To see if this is the case, I would recommend checking the temperature of the computer by using iStat Pro or iStat Nano. (Click to download)
