Why is my blender smoking?

My blender has been louder than normal for a few days and today it started smoking and when I lifted the jug off there was a lot of black flakes. Any ideas what is wrong with it and how I can fix it?!

I use a step down volt converter for up to 1000 Watts, but noticed black soot and burning smell within seconds of turning on the chopper mode. Product: Wave crusher blender.

Google User: How many watts is your blender? Where is the burning smell coming from? the blender or the converter?

A blender motor will often have a lot of inductance. Most stepdown converters are rated only for resistive loads. A large inductive load like a motor could require you use a stepdown converter that's rated for 2x-3x as big as your load.

Do not use it again as you risk a fire. If it is older than 2011 it has a three year warranty. If newer, it carries a seven years warranty. Call customer service at (801-222-0888), have your serial number ready.

Mine just did this and I called the number as you suggested. The replaced both of my jars with their updated design which contain additional bearings and a teflon gasket. Both were still under warranty. Thanks for the info!

Glad I could help ;-) Good to hear that Blendtec actually honors its warranty.

My Blendtec did the same thing this morning. I called the number you gave and they are sending out a replacement jar right away. Customer service said it was a result of a faulty jar. Thanks so much for the information.

Calling customer service for this worked, Blendtec is sending me a replacement jar. Thank you.

Mine has just done the same thing. There is a rubber gasket at the base of the blender that will rot and go bad if liquid is left in there. The best way to avoid this for as long as possible is to rinse/clean the blender immediately after it's used and then turn it upside down to dry. Mine has been fine for a long time, but my kids use it and sometimes forget. I'm just going to have Blendtec replace the gasket, it will be as good as new!

I've tried other "expensive" blenders after my first one malfunctioned (there was a short in the power switch). I HATED the one I found online. After paying over $300 for it, I sold it at a yard sale for $40. Blendtec is the best blender I've ever owned, and I'll never own another.

So I never had smoke ever coming from a blender but my knowledge in general seeing $@$* happen to blenders can answer your question. Those black flakes are the flakes from the bottom or the attachment for the blade. Through years those gears are always rubbing against each other and eventually fall apart creating the flakes. If I am right the smoke is from the gears rubbing at high speeds as the motor continues to spin as the blender blades and gears are stuck in one position. This friction is enough to burn, melt, and to create smoke. If the gears on the blades used to latch onto the motor looked all gibled and weird looking. That might be your problem and you just need to buy new attachments. If not then your blender is not good and needs to replaced.

I don't think the Blendtec has gears (the teardowns I've seen looked like direct drive), but you're on the right track.

The most common place smoke comes from is the base of the jar itself. Blendtec attaches the blade/bearing to the plastic jar with a large rubber gasket. If the bearing partially or fully seizes up, the bearing race spins and the gasket shreds. New jar fixes this problem. The gasket/blade assembly are not user replaceable.

If smoke is coming from inside the blender base, it's most likely the brush tips are overheating and burning up from the motor being way overloaded. STOP USE IMMEDIATELY and allow the unit to cool down. Maybe run it on pulse briefly without the jar so it pulls cool air and clears the smoke. But don't be too worried; they used gigantic brushes, so if one lets it cool down (20-30min) before using again, no long term damage should be done.

A clue to the low quality of these blenders is the very generous warranty they offer. Obviously they know they messed up with a poor quality product. The splined connection on the bottom of the wildside jar is made of aluminum. The splines strip and the motor keeps spinning while the blades stay still inside the jar during blending, stripping them further and making it useless. I hope somebody got fired over that design. Being that Im not a sloth, obviously the jar was cleaned after every use and so the blades were never seized with any dried up food matter. After about 20 uses I am not happy. Nuts to any warranty, looks like I will be going for that ninja afterall.
