The battery of my laptop is missing and I just want to make sure if that's what is causing that when I turn on my laptop it sends a flashing message on a black screen saying "Operating system not found..." I ask this because I don't want to buy the wrong part of the laptop. Does anyone knows if this is caused because of the laptop missing the battery or something else?

arturo soto, "Operating system not found..." is most likely caused by either a hard drive failure or not having an Operating system on your computer, but not your missing battery. Try to get into your computers BIOS by pressing F1 or F10 at the red Compaq logo or blue HP logo. here you should set your boot order to CD/Optical drive. I would try to start the computer with a Linux Live CD (i.e. Puppy Linux) and see if this will start your computer. If it does, get yourself a Windows Operating Sytem or install Linux on your Laptop. Thanks! that really helped, I guess the hard drive is damaged, when it's damaged, there's no way to save it? If not I'll use Puppy Linux, looks like a good Linux CD.

arturo soto, if it is a mechanical error, it is most likely not fixable. Try to reformat the drive and see if it was just overwritten. You could install Puppy Linux onto the drive for testing purposes if you do not have a Windows Disk. Thank you for accepting my answer.
Ok, puppy linux is installed, but unfortunately I can't connect it to the internet, is it because of the hard drive or am I doing something wrong?
does everything work from your hard drive? If so, it may just be a matter of setting it up. I suggest you check the manual on here http://puppylinux.org/main/Manual-Englis... and go through the steps and see what you get.
When I got the "Missing Operating System" error on my Sony VAIO Windows 7 laptop. Windows Boot Genius helped me to boot pc without data loss.

Hi! I was getting the same error but when I restarted my computer, it started working fine. But I need to know what could have happened and what measures should I take now to prevent it from happening again? Also, my laptop is getting stuck for, like, milliseconds so I am scared that it might happen again. The first time it happened, my screen got stuck then I got the message that there are some errors. When it restarted, I got that black screen.
Please respond soon and let me know what I should do now!

Had a customers HP 250 g4 - same issue. To resolve it, I went into bios and enabled legacy booting….. restarted… and it asked about system resume.. and hey presto booted !
tested 15 reboots, no problems….. and no data loss !
