cannot get my system to reboot

Hi there,i purchased the above system in the uk 5years ago. after the power supply blew and fried the motherboard i got both replaced, recently i done a system restore and the system would not reboot, showing the message

/Windows/system32config/windows file is missing or corrupt.

it says i may be able to repair it by running the set-up media that i recieved with my purchase but i cannot find my original set-up media. is there any way that i can get the system back working or will i have to purchase a new copy of

WINDOWS XP.

Contact eMachines and see if they will sell you a copy of the original setup disk. If they won't buy a OEM copy of XP with a new COA and install that. Ralph

I've come across a number of 2220 boards and many Dell boards that were populated with defective Rubycon electrolytic caps. Recapped 16 such boards already and now they work just fine.

Look at the motherboard very closely with a flashlight and see if any of the caps are swollen on the top where that "X" is cut into the top. Some may pop out the bottom. If any look like that then I suspect the board is defective.

The 1800 ufd 6.3 vdc caps are notoriously suspect. They were counterfeits as well as other values on the board.

great advise and excellent repair, but the repair on this particular one was strictly software related.

You can attempt to do a system recovery (it will reset the computer to factory specs) from the boot menu. Here is a link to a website that will give you step by step instructions. I hope this helps.

If you have access to another PC with a CD/DVD burner download a copy of the Ultimate Bootdisk and copy the ISO file to a CD. Botup from that CD and use one of the HD diagnostics to test the HD first to be sure the HD isn't fried before you invest in the oem or the system dsiks from emachines.

I got my late Mom-in-Law's "e" computer with a startup issue. The caps are fine, and my Linux live disks are working in it fine. The Ultimate Bootdisk mentioned above would have the same effect, with the advantage of having the diagnostic tools readily available.

You can also get a copy of XP from a torrent site, but this is illegal so i do not recommend it

My advice is to borrow a copy of XP from someone who has it

(i am pointing out using torrents for supported versions of windows is wrong and illegal)

Answered and accepted in April. Why bring up an illegal item at this late date? -
