iPod buzzing battery, logic board or hard drive

My old iPod video 5th gen broke a couple of years ago and now I want to fix it.

The problem before was an issue that arose while charging it in a speaker dock. The screen lit up white and I believe it flickered. But there was this buzzing noise that came from inside the iPod. It was very loud, died off the next day but had to put it in the basement to not be able to hear it. Went to apple to see if they new what the issue was and they said it could be a couple things so never repaired it but now I want rockbox.

Maybe it was some sort of bad energy that came from the dock while charging and fried it?

Also it is not able to be reconized by the computer anymore or seems to charge. When plugged into the wall the black screen with apple logo and then white screen with sad ipod

James Moorcroft, the first thing that comes to my mind is a bad hard drive. I would start by replacing the battery, simply due to the fact that it is most likely at the end of its lifespan, and it will provide a known good starting point. After that, try to place the iPod in disk mode and see if you can access the hard drive. You could also try to get a USB-to-Zif drive adapter and see if you have access. That is also the most common error for the sad face iPod. This model is a good iPod and it does have excellent audio qualities, so I personally would not mind to spend the money for a new hard drive. Use these guides to work on your iPod. Hope this helps, good luck.
