Does anyone know other potential causes for a poor wifi signal?
Hey everyone,
a few days ago I got my sisters old Iphone 4 to make it ready so that our dad can use it.
While I was doing so I noticed that the battery was quite weak, so I ordered a new one and replaced it. Now I have a very weak WIFI signal. (The little problem is, that my sister can't clearly remember whether the wifi was working before she stopped using the iphone or not... so that it could be an issue which dates back some time - however she thinks it worked just fine)
Anyway, it's the same phenomena that I have already read lots about (only 3 bars while being 50cm away from the router and no signal at all in the next room). Problem is that I only found threads with users who tried to replace their screen or tried to do some more serious repairs and in almost all cases the cause was the "wifi"screw (the long one), or the lost clip that is used to make contact when the "wifi"screw is tightened.
Things is, as I said, I just replaced the battery - so that I shouldn't have come into contact with critical areas.
What I tried so far:
1) rebooting the Iphone
2) resetting and installing a new IOS (6.0.1)
3) disassembling of the wifi-shield to check for that little contact everyone loses during their repair (as expected it is where it should be)
4) cleaning the contacts
5) using tinfoil to make contact between the long wifi screw and the frame(saw this here:
http://www.beijingiphonerepair.com/fix/f... )
6) talking to the little man in the phone, imploring him to repair it -.-
However, every single one of my attempts was in vain.
Help is greatly appreciated!! Seriously I am going nuts over this ; /
What really is strange is that GPS and cellular data signals are working just fine. It's really just the wifi signal..
I am about to give up on it(and probably would have done so long ago if it wouldn't be for my old man..
cheers
nico
Update
Ok, sorry for the long absent time - it took the part quite some time to arrive(the new speaker with the mounted antenna)
I installed it right away, but nothing changed ... so it was not the cellular antenna after all -.-
well .. worth the try though!
Any other ideas ?

Edit: Today I replaced the wifi-shield with the wifi shield from my own Iphone 4- still no changes, so it is not the wifi shield.
Is it possible in any way that the cellular antenna (the one that's mounted on the speakers) is damaged and influences the wifi signal strength although the cellular data signal is good ??

I think the cellular antenna does play some part in the wifi signal-sure I've read it somewhere recently. You could just unplug your connectors and if you had a known good part (as we all do) plug the antenna (black wire connector) and dock back on..change in wifi means it's the antenna.

@ pollytintop So you are saying that the cellular antenna could be the thing that influences the wifi signal strength? Hm, I thought about this before but discarded the thought right away when I saw several posts that these two don't influence each other. But I will try it now that I am not the only one anymore who is thinking this could be the solution :)
Thanks I 'll update the thread once I tried it.
(Could be some days since I have an exam coming up in the next days )

I would look at a new mid frame Nico.

Wow I thought I was the only person this has happened too. I pulled my phone apart to look at a stuck power button. I fiddled around a bit and when I put it together the perfectly good wifi dropped out unless in the same room. I've taken the EMI plate off atleast a dozen times following all those other 'loose screw' guides but still no help. I'll follow you and hope a wise techie responds.
