iPhone 4 GSM Water Damaged, turns on when connected and Reboots

Hello everyone,

I have an iPhone 4 32 gb At&t.

I saw some corrosion around the logic board components, so I put it in Alcohol for 2 days and brushed it well.

I also put a new battery and Dock connector since the water sensor on it was red.

The phone itself does not power on by pressing power button, however, it turns on when connected to power outlet or pc and reboots consequently.

iTunes does not recognize it as well as Redsn0w.

Please help me to figure out this problem.

Update

Hello again,

Does anyone have any idea what should I do at this point.

I have replaced the broken coil and washed it with alcohol one more time and it still reboots and does not power on with Battery.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

I have been able to repair some iPhones by scrubbing with alcohol, but I have never used a soaking method. Usually a 99.9% pure alcohol and a few minutes with a sturdy toothbrush will do the trick.

I would try once more to simply scrub the board and see if it will stay on with being pluged into power directly (not to PC). If not then there may be little hope

Thanks for your respond,

I did try to just brushing it with alcohol, and I noticed that there is a component there by the Power Management IC which it looks like cracked.
Here is couple of pictures that specifies the IC:

what should I do at this point? Can I find this IC? if so what does it called?

Kia, yes it looks like that part is broken. It is one of the power inductors and could be the cause for your problems. Of course you do want to make sure that all corrosion is removed and that you phone is clean. The part that is broken is a coil, with an Apple designation of L17_PMU, and the values are 2.2UH-1.5A-98MOHM. Now, you can most certainly try and obtain one from places like Mouser.com or digikey.com. Here is a pretty close match and should work for you. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks for your detailed information. I did order that coil from the link you provided me.

Since you're the expert, can you tell me how to take it off of the logic board, and how to put the new one back in? What equipments do I need for this job?

Best,

Kia, I most certainly am not the expert :-) The coil is an SMD device and best way to solder it on is via a hot air rework station. but you also use a very fine soldering iron. You have experience with that?

Well, I don't want to ruin the logic board. that's why I asked about the equipments. Do you think http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en... or somthing close to this would do the job for me?

lools like a little on the hot side with the 100W but it could work. Since it seems like you are new to this, check out this video and download my favorite guide from here.

It looks like that I have everything that I need for it. I have to wait for the coil. I will update when I get into it. Thanks everyone for your advices.

Yes, Mr. Morteza. I have experience of soldering connectors on 3g series.

it's always good to see a country-mate.

Thanks for asking though
