Laptop Will Not Turn On or Suddenly Turns Off
Screen is black, no laptop function and no functioning of any keys or laptop suddenly turns off and no functioning.
Power Button Not Activated
Try pressing and/or holding power button, if still not working, read on.
Computer Overheating
If the screen suddenly goes black and computer starts shutting down then laptop could just be overheating. First try placing on a cold, flat surface with an external fan on it. If this doesn't work then try and look at fan itself to see if there is any dust blocking the vents. If neither of the above are a problem, then the problem could be with the fan itself and it will likely have to be replaced.
Faulty Charger
Laptop may be dead or still working however when charger is plugged into laptop and wall, computer doesn't acknowledge it. Try going to another power outlet to make sure it is not the outlet, and if possible try another charger to make sure it is not the computer. If laptop doesn't power on when plugged into the second outlet, charger may need to be replaced.
Faulty/Dead Battery
Try plugging in the laptop charger in case battery is just drained. Usually laptop will acknowledge that it is being charged when power source is plugged in. If the laptop fails to hold a charge at all, the battery will likely have to be replaced with a replacement battery.
Faulty Motherboard
If the laptop fails to turn on and boot-up and/or it suddenly shuts down then the motherboard may be faulty. Other characteristics of a failed motherboard are blue screens with white text upon start-up, laptop suddenly freezing and possibly shutting down, and new applications not downloading or working. If any of the previous are problems then it is possible that the motherboard would need to be replaced.
Laptop Screen Unresponsive
The laptop shows that it is on however the screen is black or it dims suddenly.
Automatic Dimming Setting
Laptop usually has a preset time limit where after which the screen will dim. Try touching the mousepad or pressing a key to see if the screen lights up again. If screen continues to not light up, then proceed to further Troubleshooting.
Faulty LCD Display
If the computer acknowledges that it is being charged and is able to hold its charge it may be a bad screen display. If this is the case then the LCD display will have to be replaced.
Laptop Has Slow Functioning
Laptop has normal start-up and normal functioning speed however it is slow when in high use or with multiple programs open.
Damaged or Faulty RAM Stick
When laptop RAM casing is opened, the stick is altered in some way. This can cause laptop to suddenly restart or freeze, a blue screen with white text to appear before restarting, or functioning to be slow when laptop is in high use. Files can also be inexplicably corrupted, or attempt to install new program continually fails. If this is the case then the RAM will likely have to be replaced.
Overheating RAM Stick
Too much heat from other components of the laptop can cause the RAM stick to fail. Laptop may suddenly restart or freeze, files may be inexplicably corrupted, or attempt to install new program continually fails. Laptop may also show a blue screen with white text upon restarting. Move the laptop into a cooler area to prevent long term damage, and if problems persist, or continually gets worse, considering replacing RAM stick.
Faulty Motherboard
If the laptop fails to boot-up or laptop starts to boot-up and then shuts down then the motherboard may be faulty. Other characteristics of a failed motherboard are blue screens with white text upon start-up, laptop suddenly freezing and possibly shutting down, and new applications not downloading or working. If any of the previous are problems then it is possible that the motherboard would need to be replaced.
Battery Rapidly Loses Charge
Laptop shows that it is fully charged and loses charge quickly or simply won't charge.
Clogged Charging Ports
Try removing the charger from the charging port and looking to see if either end is clogged with dust or debris. If there is some then remove and try plugging it back in to see if this solved the problem. If this does not work or is not an issue then proceed to further troubleshooting.
Faulty Battery
If the previous troubleshooting wasn't an issue or didn't work then the battery could be an issue. First try plugging in power adaptor into another wall socket and see if battery will charge, if it doesn't then the battery will likely have to be replaced.
Faulty/Damaged Power Adaptor
Try looking along the length of the power adaptor to make sure there are no holes in the casing or no damage to plug. Next, try plugging in adaptor into another wall socket to make sure it is not the socket. If neither works then the power adaptor will likely have to be replaced.
Laptop is Out of Data Storage or Data Suddenly Lost
Laptop has little storage space left and/or a back-up of documents/data is wanted, or data on computer was suddenly lost.
Outdated or Faulty Hard Drive
Laptop doesn't have enough space and more storage space is needed or interested in having data backed-up. If this is the case then Hard Drive will likely need to be replaced.
Complete Hard Drive Failure
When laptop has sudden loss of files and/or previous folder names or files were altered, then this could be a result of the Hard Drive failure and it will need to be replaced.
Laptop Overheats/Fan is Not Working
When laptop is in prolonged use and the body becomes very hot to the touch and possibly turns off.
Laptop is in a High Temperature Environment
Try placing laptop on a cool-flat surface with a external fan blowing on the computer. If laptop continues to overheat then proceed to troubleshooting below.
Dusty Fan or Vents
If external cooling via outside fan does not work then try to look at the fan itself to see if it is just dusty and could use a cleaning. To clean the fan one can use compressed air. If cleaning the fan still allows computer to overhead then proceed to further troubleshooting.
To get to the fan the keyboard will first have to be removed.
Faulty Fan
If manual cooling of the laptop and cleaning the fan also does not work and laptop continues to overheat with prolonged use and possibly turns off as a result, then the fan will likely need to be replaced.
Laptop Touchpad is Unresponsive
Laptop touchpad is touched and the computer doesn't recognize that it has been .
Sticky Keys
If keys are becoming stuck when pressing them or are stuck down then you may need to take them out and clean them. To do this use a flat head screwdriver to pull up and loosen the key then pull it out. Once clean, put it back in its respective place by clicking it in.
Touchpad Disabled
If touchpad is not responding to commands, try holding down the "FN" button and "F7" to enable touchpad. If this does not work, then proceed to troubleshooting below.
Faulty Touchpad
Touchpad doesn't recognize commands from fingers. If this is the case then the touchpad will likely need to be replaced.
Audio Turns Off Unexpectedly
Sound is not coming from the computer or it suddenly stops.
Loose Headphone Jack
If using headphones, the audio drivers may not be broken, instead it may be the headphones. Try taking out the headphone jack and placing it back into computer, to see if the sound begins again. Often this is the case of a loose headphone jack and if its reinserted then sound will begin again. If this does not work then proceed to next Troubleshooting.
Faulty Audio Driver
Try and go to the Control panel in the Start-Up menu on the laptop. Look for and click on the sound icon within the Control panel, check to make sure that speakers are not muted and click on speakers to see if these is an error message. If not muted and still not working then the problem is likely to do with the audio driver itself, if this is the case then the audio driver will likely have to be replaced.
CD's and/or DVD's Will Not Play
When CD or DVD is inserted into the optical disc drive, they will not play on computer.
Faulty/Scraped CD or DVD
If movie or songs suddenly cut out or stop altogether try inserting another DVD or CD that is known to work in case the previous DVD or CD was scratched in certain area. If problem persists then proceed to further troubleshooting.
Faulty Optical Disc Drive
If CD or DVD doesn't play at all when inserted into the disc drive, and if the second CD or DVD still doesn't work then the problem is likely with the optical drive itself and it will need to be replaced.
