Brandon Rogers, On the hardware side only time this will stop work is if ypu have a bad clone, corrupted files on the old hd before cloning and/or bad SSD drive.
Software side would be a newer OS is like the latest and greatest on a much old G4 or older. Let's say a 2001 model in compare to a 2016 model. Everything's has a limit
That's model can be fix. It depends on what's actually broken.
Jeannine, any generic or brand name hard disk maker will work in a mac. The drive just must be formated for Mac. You can either format before or while reinstalling the mac software.
Ruby, yes you can swap one HD from one Mac to another as long as u have it the same model or series. Hardware is the same so to the Mac HD it doesn't look any difference. If it will not boot up like before insert current Mac OS Disc, then off machine completely, hold down option while turn on till up get to the boot menu which will show both your mac HD and the mac disc. Choose the mac disc, once loaded to welcome menu choose language and go to tools and go to disk utility. Check/Repair Disk and Disk permission. Reboot to see if machine will boot back into Mac desktop screen.
