Would someonw PLEASE ass a new pix with both hard drives installed? Someone asked 2 years ago. This is really is the single most important picture.
I'm installing an SSD with the original drive and I can't seem to make them both fit onto the back tray.
What would HELP is if people can locate third-party “brushwheels” that fit a model, please comment with your model and a link to the aftermarket brushwheel.
I can confirm on the model NV682, Shark will only sell you a complete head — but NOT the brushwheel. I saw a bunch of aftermarket wheels on Amazon that MIGHT work but they didn’t list “682” in the supported models, and they didn’t have free returns so I could not be confident enough to order.
The good news is if you CALL Shark, they will send you a replacement head unit for 50% off with free shipping.
Once customer service confirmed the brushwheel is “integral” to the head unit, at least I knew it could not be replaced at least not using genuine parts. Shark could just SAY THIS on their website - instead of showing all replacement parts EXCEPT the brushwheel. When I told customer service I would NEVER spend $130 on a head unit + shipping, he out me on hold to “check something” and offered this deal which I took.
You can find aftermarket shark brushwheels, but often they don’t say if they’ll fit the NV682 model.. probably because Shark’s done such a wonderful job at killing the parts aftermarket.
Before you toss the head unit, salvage the motor + hear + toothed belt and give it to an evil genius you know. The motor has tons of torque.
This is a good writeup. One flaw is the old battery photo doesn’t show the markings — not everyone will want to hot-glue a NiMH battery pack from scratch, when you can purchase 4 for $10 on Amazon (from a baby monitor or cordless phone). These they have the advantage of using JST connectors (though you’d need to solder on a socket to take advantage of that).
ALSO - if you have the “fat Spoka” as I do, it uses 3 NiMH formed in a triangle (byd nimh battery h-aaa550X3) and those are IMPOSSIBLE to find so no retail option there — I probably will have to hot-glue the battery pack… :-)
You might find the two silver screws (along the edge of the grill) will not attach. That's because the hard drive was installed a millimeter or two in the wrong place (or maybe the new hard drive has screw holes offset, in the wrong place). This happened to me. Rather than take it apart (again), I'll just secure the two screws that go into the tabs. No question this will keep things secure enough (just a question if I'll suffer noise or rattle). Extra screws are fun :-)
+1: Don't remove the motherboard, and don't buy the tool to do it. When it's time to slide out the logic board, just push gently on the inside of the metal air guide fins on the intake. This will "eject the motherboard out the necessary 1/2 inch. Be mindful of the length of wires going from under the RAM out to the front of the case, as you don't want to pull hard or disconnect these..
The hard drive tape cover is there to protect the hard drive's exposed circuit board (remember this, the picture doesn't show it). You probably do not need it if your hard drive is totally shielded in a box, as many SSD devices are. That said, it's VERY easy to remove and replace the tape using the spudger (keeps your finger oil off the glue).
You could always create your own logic-board removal by re-bending what's known as a "landscaping staple". It's just stiff steel wire.
With a Mac Mini 2012 model, you DO NOT need the logic-board removal tool. I wish I had read these comments before I spent the ten dollars on the tool (I'm not criticizing ifixit here, but I wasted my money).
