Dropped my phone in an (unused) toilet

問題

I was trying to put my son down for a nap and took him to a dark room (the bathroom). I'd been in there for a while and pulled out my phone to check the time. As I held it up, I heard a *plop* noise and realized I was only holding my case. The phone had slipped out.

I removed the phone and was delighted to see a very colorful display on the screen as it slowly died. I was out of town and did not have my tools, so I shook the water out as best as I could and put the phone in a bag of rice for a couple days to dry out.

When I removed the phone from the rice I discovered I couldn't get the lightning charge cable in. There was a piece of rice stuck in the port. Like an idiot, I used a steak knife (still not home and away from tools) to dig the rice out of the lightning port. I was successful, but disappointed that the phone would not charge.

Once I got home to proper repair tools (from an earlier iFixit repair) I opened the phone up to find a lot of corrosion. After the phone dried out, I cleaned the corrosion with IPA as best I could and re-assembled the phone. Still wouldn't take a charge.

With a loupe, I took a look at the lightning port and saw that I had destroyed one of the pins. So, I ordered the new assembly on the hope that was the only issue. The part wasn't very expensive so I thought it was worth the risk.

The part from iFixit arrived and I installed it with no difficulty. Once put back together the phone charged. The taptic engine responded to touches on the home button and I could stream music over bluetooth. But, I still couldn't see anything on the screen.

So I took the phone apart again and gave it to my wife to take to her work (an electronics manufacturing facility) to get a slightly better cleaning and some up-close pictures of the corrosion under a microscope. (attached)

The screen connector is definitely fried. I could order a new screen from iFixit, but it looks like the logic board connector is also very questionable.

At this point, I'm only ~$25 in to repair costs. A new screen would run me about $150. I have a line on used iPhone 6 for $200. So, unfortunately, I think my repair story stops here. The new part worked great, but just wasn't enough to fix the massive water and corrosion damage.

Don't get impatient and use a kitchen knife on your phone!!!
