1) Buy the tools. They're not that expensive and you can't do it without them.
2) Watch the videos (twice). I missed the "don't pry here" warning the first time through.
3) Take your time. Those screws are small. If you rush it, you'll lose one. Use a white, flat plate to hold the screws.

I'm a programmer and work on Windows PC's all the time. I've stayed away from Apple products because of their reputation for difficulty. This project was my first Apple product repair and a no-lose situation. My daughter and her husband were planning to buy new phones anyway. The combination of clear, concise videos and the right tools made this a cake walk. My kids like their phones and will not be buying the new ones. I want to encourage all my PC-centric fellow travelers to "just do it". And use the iFixit resources. Their video and tool recommendations were spot on. Overall, this was a very successful project.
