Easy Repair of Zojirushi EC-BD15 Coffeemaker

Andris Vizulis -

問題

My Zojirushi EC-BD15 suddenly stopped heating and percolating in a consistent manner. This coffeemaker, about 6 years old now, is my all-time favorite and replacements, if they can be found at all, are now in the $150-$200 range. Parts are also hard to find, especially the critical thermal disk temperature component. Being an engineer, I was determined to find a replacement component and extend the life of my Zojirushi.

修理

The repair ended up being simpler than I imagined. After locating and ordering a good match for an alternate thermal component (OCSParts.com, Part #105006) and some thermal paste (Mouser.com, Part #590-860-4G), I removed the bottom cover of the Zojirushi. The component that needed replacing was located right there, in full view after removing a small crossbar (2 screws) and unfastening a simple clip holding the component to the heater body. I cut the leads going to the old component, stripped and scraped the leads about 1/4", and then soldered them to the new thermal switch component. Then I applied a small amount of thermal paste to the face of the new component, placed it against the heater body, and snapped the retaining clip back into place. Replaced the bottom cover .... done! Worked perfectly!

アドバイス

It's essential that the solder connections of the two wires to the new component are good ones. The wires should be stripped 1/4" and well scraped to remove oxidation, and solder flowed between the wires and the tabs on the new component. If you've never soldered, get some help from someone or online.

It's also essential that you use thermal paste between the face of the component and the heater body. Otherwise, the temperature of the heater body and the thermal sensor will be different, and the coffeemaker will heat erratically again.
