I have a 5th generation iPod. It has gigabytes of music on it. The battery was dead; it could not be recharged.

I'm not a very handyman type person. My alternative to fixing it myself was to find someone else to do it, or recycle the device. I checked two repair places; neither one would work on the iPod. I bought the iFix kit. It took me about 30 minutes to take the ipod apart, remove the old battery, put the new battery in, and put the ipod back together again (sort of back together - good enough.) Actually making the repair felt good. Until...

Once I got the iPod running again I learned there was nothing of value on the iPod. It didn't have any music on it, only Audible books, books that are backed up on the cloud. So functionally, changing the battery was not an especially good use of my time. I'm unlikely to use the iPod much. But I still felt sort of good about atually repairing a piece of electronics.
