My sleek, two week old iPhone 6 plus was as naked as a baby and twice as vulnerable. Living creatures have the potential to heal themselves. As a climbing instructor and potter, I'm often in situations where dropping things would be life altering, so I tend to be very conscientious of these risks. I don't fumble things often. I photograph and shoot video of my students with my phone during ascents where a tumble would likely override ANY case's ability to protect my device. My swanky Quadlock was ordered and lay tantalizingly close in our temporarily unmanned campus mailroom. In a rare burst of multitasking efficiency, I dashed off to retrieve my youngest daughter from preschool, planning to return 15 minutes later when the postman was present to take possession of the oversized delivery. The 50 yard sprint to the car was interrupted by the all too familiar clatter of technology on pavement. I work with teenagers, so I probably didn't curse out loud, but... I don't remember things perfectly. No promises.

This wasn't my first rodeo. My dad's lifeline for entertainment and connection to the news media is his iPad and I had replaced his screen successfully leaving me feeling pretty smug. I ordered the proper parts from ifixit.com and set aside an hour or so to work through the 6 plus repair. I followed the steps carefully and despite my scarred, stuffed sausage fingers, I was able to maneuver the various tools successfully. The repair was almost flawless, despite a screen so cracked that the suction cup wasn't able to be as helpful as it could. I sealed the case and tried to turn on the phone and nothing happened. Head in hands, I lamented the confidence that had led me to attempt the repair. Then I read the comments and found that others had disconnected the battery and reconnected it to get the screen to light up. It worked. Phew.

アドバイス

Zippered pockets, people. Cases save phones as much from friction in a pocket as they do from dispersing the force from a ground strike. If you do crack the thing and have to replace the screen, disconnect the battery and reconnect it. It won't hurt and may just keep you from freaking out.
