How Pocketable is the Motorola Razr?

We know you’re waiting for the Moto Razr teardown, and we’ll get there, but first: let’s do some hard-hitting journalism!

The Razr is back. And it folds—but differently this time. A foldable phone sounds cool in theory—a screen that bends instead of breaks sounds like a win. Or failing that… at least a device that starts a phone and becomes a tablet? But the foldable Razr is really neither of these things. It’s an awkwardly small phone that becomes an awkwardly too-long phone? Or maybe it’s an unwieldy “wearable” that becomes a fragile handset.

This thing’s only saving grace—aside from the nostalgia factor— is that it might (just maybe) be comfortably pocketable. As someone who hasn’t had a pocketable phone since my Samsung Evergreen slider, I’m particularly interested in doing some science. Could this form factor be a reversal of the ever-decreasing pocketability of smartphones? Is it the wave of the future?

We put the Motorola Razr in some pockets

We measured the flat dimensions of 5 of our coworkers pockets, and asked them to rate the pocketability of the (folded) Razr on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 being: I never want to take this phone out of my pocket it’s so comfortable, and 1 being: this is the worst thing to ever happen to my pocket. While we didn’t bring any JNCO jeans as a failsafe, we got a decent spread to help you decide if you want to pocket the 2020 Razr (if you can find one).

So, can you fit a foldable Motorola Razr in your pocket? Probably!

While our respondents found the phone to be both surprisingly heavy and too thick to be comfy, the phone reached a surprisingly high average pocketability rating: 5.7. At nearly twice the size and weight of the Razr you remember, this foldable makes itself felt. That said, at nearly a 6/10 (on a scale we made up in a donut-fueled haze this morning) this phone could be a lot worse.

But wait, there’s more! As you read this, our teardown team is diligently tearing this newfangled foldable down. We’ll have even more scoring, and yes, even some wallpapers, for you shortly so stay tuned, and stay in the loop!
