[* black] The Smart Cover attaches to the iPad 2 in a unique way.
[* black] Magnets buried in the side of the case opposite the volume buttons mate to a rubber-coated semicircular swiveling rod attached to the smart cover.
[* black] When the smart cover is pressed down against the front panel, magnets attached to the aluminum case of the iPad 2 near the volume buttons hold it down nice and snugsnug against the magnetized center third of the metal plate in the Smart Cover closest to the volume button side of the iPad.
[* black] What appears to be a small hall effect IC seen in the third picture is assumedly used to sense the magnetized portion of the plate in the smart cover to bring the iPad in and out of sleep mode when the smart cover is applied and removed
