[title] And now for the fun!
[* black] If you removed the lid, replace it and secure it with at least 2 screws on opposite sides.
[* black] Using a power drill and a high speed steel drill, drill a hole through the lid at the position you noted. A 3 - 4mm drill will do nicely.
[* black] The drill bit will hit the disk inside. For a very old drive this might be made of aluminium, and you can keep on drilling until you come out the other side. But most probably the disk or disks will be made of glass or ceramic, and the drill will make no further progress.
[* black] Poke a nail punch or centre punch through the hole and hit it quite hard with a hammer until you smash the disk. If you have neither of those you can use a sturdy screwdriver. You might have to enlarge the hole with a bigger drill bit.
[* black] Shake the shards away from the hole and look into it. If you can see another shiny unbroken surface, there's a second disk platter. Smash that in the same way.
[* black] A desktop drive might have several platters. You can confirm that you've smashed them all by continuing with the drill. Once it comes out of the other side of the drive your job is done. Wasn't that fun?
- | [* black] But before you finish, cover the holes on both sides with PVC or similar sticky tape so that no shards can escape. They will be extremely sharp and quite dangerous. |
