Kitchen Shut-Off Valve Replacement

This guide describes how to replace/clean a kitchen shut-off valve. The shut-off valve is responsible for shutting off the water flow towards the kitchen sink. Repairing a leakage and/or cleaning is very important as the shut-off valve is needed in order to maintain water flow and cleanliness. There are certain tools needed for this repair, the parts include the valve, the nut, the screw, the shut-off that connects to the pipe, and the stem kit.

    • Ensure the main water supply is shut off to prevent any water from flowing while you start this repair.

    • The water supply valve can be located anywhere from your basement, water heater, furnace, or garage.

    • Open the cabinet under the kitchen sink and ensure the workplace is clean and free from clutter.

    • Use the screwdriver to unscrew the valve from the pipe.

    • Prepare the bucket under the valve and when ready, use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut that connects the shut-off valve to the water supply pipe, make sure the wrench tightly grasps the nut and start turning counter-clockwise gently.

    • Be careful when repairing to not use excessive force, as you could damage the pipe or the valve.

    • Clean the valve using a cleaning rag, making sure it is all ready to be replaced.

    • Now tighten the nut from the top as shown, to tightly secure the shut-off valve again.

    • Do NOT overtighten.

    • Use the screwdriver to screw the valve back on. To do this, first insert the valve and then put the screw back into the socket. Then start tightening, but do not overtighten it, as it can damage the valve and/or the pipe.

    • Once completed, you have officially replaced/cleaned the kitchen shut-off valve. Good work!
