    • Before doing anything, ensure that the mixer is not plugged in! Then, remove the cover from the high speed attachment. If you don't have this cover, then the low speed attachments will not work anyway, as the cover engages the clutch when it is latched on.

  2. Disassembling Kenwood Chef A701A Gearbox and Orbital Mixer assembly: 手順 2、 2の画像 1 Disassembling Kenwood Chef A701A Gearbox and Orbital Mixer assembly: 手順 2、 2の画像 2
    • Now, remove the kenwood chef logo covering the front grinder attachment by pulling the white handled lever towards the edge of the mixer and then pulling the Kenwood panel away from the mixer.

    • Next, unscrew the three screws holding the high-speed attachment port in place. Once removed, the attachment port lifts up freely.

    • Then, take the plastic cover off the other attachment port on the top of the mixer.

  4. • Now, lift the gearbox cover up and towards the front of the mixer - it should slide straight off

    • Marvel at the decades of ingredients stored safely inside your mixer!

  5. Disassembling Kenwood Chef A701A Gearbox and Orbital Mixer assembly, Remove the drive belt and springed gear: 手順 5、 3の画像 1 Disassembling Kenwood Chef A701A Gearbox and Orbital Mixer assembly, Remove the drive belt and springed gear: 手順 5、 3の画像 2 Disassembling Kenwood Chef A701A Gearbox and Orbital Mixer assembly, Remove the drive belt and springed gear: 手順 5、 3の画像 3
    • You can remove the belt that drives the gearbox at this point - if this has worn out then only the high speed attachment will have been working. It will lift off nicely with a screwdriver.

    • The large gear then needs to be gripped, and the "dog" on top of it needs to be removed.

    • You'll need to keep the gear in place - either fit an attachment and wedge a piece of timber between it and the body of the machine or get someone else to hold onto it tight) and turn the dog with a spanner. Eventually you or the person holding will feel it release, and you can unscrew the final turn carefully so the spring doesn't fly off!

    • If using timber for the above a piece of dressed timber about 120 mm long (and 15 mm wide x 10 mm high) was used succesfully for this. It can be used to refit the dog by wedging it on the opposite side when refitting

    • Apologies for the cake/belt continuity errors in this set - some are taken during reassembly

    Hey Josh

Is there a pin or something between the lid and the dog? I can't get the %#*@ thing to engage!

    Rebecca Coleman - 返信

Rebecca - the liquidiser outlet cover has a pin which should push down on the clutch dog to make it engage. If the clutch dog has worn prongs or a stripped thread it may need to be replaced.

    • If you just need to remove the large gear, here's the time to do it. You can lift it off with a pair of pliers underneath. Note that this is attached to a plastic gear inside the gearbox and this is the usual failure point if your low speed attachment is not working but your mixer runs.

    • Next, undo the screws holding the gearbox onto the mixer body. There is one on either side of the mixer (only one shown). If your motor is dead, you may not need to do this.

I'm trying to reassemble my gearbox after regreasing, but can't get the clutch dog back on..any advice? I have the same type as in this picture, not the nylon large pulley. I'm pressing down on the dog while turning the beater fixing, but it just won't catch the threads. Is there another technique?

    Jennifer - 返信

Silly question, I know, but are you turning it the correct direction? From the pics it does look like a normal RH thread.

    • Next, remove the plastic cover on the bottom of the gearbox. At this point, old crumbs will be getting everywhere. This is held on by four screws, which are removed in the first picture. At this point, you also need to pull the plastic cover off the lever at the front of the mixer.

    • You now have access to the lower plastic cover - best to give this a wash along with the felt. (picture 2)

    • Behold the beauty of the Kenwood gearbox (picture 3). Best not to wash this, but remove the 6 screws to gain access.

Hi Josh Watson, if you come back to this at some point, I would like to know how to pull apart the planetary head - the chrome plate and the big gear visible on the other side - as mine is notchy.

Its an old machine I bought to pull apart, and it runs very noisily. The grease was black and thickened around the main gear teeth, and had spun off the teeth leaving them bare. As a result all teeth are worn. It has an aluminium sacrificial gear, not sure if they went to plastic later? Might have prevented some of the wear.

    Cheers

Heya, I'm planning on adding a full disassembly for this as ours is currently burnt out and I think needing new brushes. I'll try and find out then.

    Josh Watson - 返信

Thanks Josh. I think it should be done early on when the gearbox is still mounted, I found a copy of the service manual via someone's comment somewhere, have to find it again, and they mention Special Tools...but I think you can put something in the front outlet to lock it and undo the nut.

    Adrienne Walker - 返信

Oh hey, here is the service manual and parts list.

    • One thing to do with that - open it up! The cover lifts off showing the still well lubricated gears. Normal failure point ringed - remove this and replace with a new one to fix!

    • Reassembly is the reverse of dismantling the mixer.

We have one of these old beauties and will never part with it. My only question is, if I take the mixer apart and find I need a part or two, where do I get them from? We live near Gosford NSW. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Excellent guide.  Only omission.  The dog on top of the gear. Is it lift off  or screwed, if so is it anti clock to unscrew

    Dhanji - 返信

Is the dog on top of the large gear, screwed? If so, does it come out anti clock or clock?

These instructions are also applicable (near enough) to the KM331 model.

Thanks for sharing!Just in case the repair grease is not available locally (nationally), here’s a good alternative:

    > Super Lube 71150 Synthetic Grease PTFE Extreme Pressure High Temperature

It is food safe (NSF H1 registered), hast the same NLGI viscosity rating as the original Shell grease (NLGI grade 2), doesn’t brake down over time and is reasonably priced. Works perfectly fine in my A701A.

    Hi Josh,
If there is a dodgy gearbox bearing, do you need pullers of some kind to remove it?

Hi I get a slight screeching noise between speed Two and three do you think this is anything to worry about.

The mixer seems perfect at maximum speed.

Hi,

I’m not entirely sure, but it sounds like the gearbox (or another part of the drive) may need greasing? The grease can dry up over time and it would lead to that.

Thanks,

Josh

Josh Watson - 返信

what kind of oil do you use in the gearbox

Mark Corkum - 返信

What type of grease is used in the gearbox (my earlier question was an error)

Mark Corkum - 返信

I’m not sure on the exact spec for the grease, but make sure you get Food Grade grease - it isn’t a sealed unit. Googling Kenwood Food Grade grease finds a few sellers - I can’t remember what I used exactly but it was definitely food grade grease, not kenwood specific though.

Josh Watson -

Kenwood’s service manual specifies to use 133gr (4 3/4ozs) of Shell L.G.P.1 62814 or Shell L.G.P.1 62819. I was not able to find the specs for this grease. As the separation between the gear box and the food is properly solved I think the use o food grade grease is not mandatory, but I would recommend it anyway. Search for e.g. ‘Food Grade White Lithium EP Grease’. Kenwood Swiss no longer services those machines but the front-desk girl recommended to use just Vaseline - I really doubt about this…

I collected many links to instructionas and spare parts in a youtube playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL...

There is a variety of kits available that contain grease and other spare parts you might need to repair your Kenwood. It might be a good idea to replace at the same time brushes, resistors and capacitors of the motor.

The service manual recommends to press the grease after reassemly into the gearbox one youtube guy just used a scraper to fill the box before assembly.

Walter Schütz -

Walter, Thanks for adding the service manual spec.

I’d definitely make sure to use food grade grease as the gearbox seal isn’t necessarily perfect. The gearbox on my machine above is full of cake crumbs from over the decades. Also, If you use the anything too viscous it will find its way into the mixing bowl.

Josh Watson -

Our Kenwood just came to a halt! I have dismantled as you suggest and it appears that the gearbox is OK but the orbital crank pinion has lost a couple of teeth.

It seems to turn ok now but will it do permanent damage if I do not get another pinion?

Hi, I have absolutely no power or noise from my A701. I’ve checked the plug fuse. Any ideas?

Timothy Wright - 返信

Hi, mine has done the same - it might be the bushes? I don’t know for sure; we replaced ours. However; it’s up the loft, so if lockdown carries on for much longer, expect a bush replacement guide :)

Josh Watson -

my planet hub model a701a does not turn when loaded under heavy bread stirring conditions. the drive shaft turns as both low speeds (upper and front) work correctly but the spin loosens the planet nut. the actual problem is the inside f the planet hub hole has been worn larger so that the hub does not engage the flat of the shaft. any ideas where one could get a replacement hub or complete assembly, thanks. enjoyed the vid.

Mine was working great - turned it off to add water and then refused to turn back on again. Could it be the motor?

My Kenwood Chef Classic fell off counter but carried on mixing. Cover is slightly scew and beaters dont touch bottom of bowl. Is this easy to fix? Still works. No funny sounds.

Hi, I’m not sure which model I have, but she has a dark blue top. My dough was very stiff, and she now makes a bad noise, kind of ticking. Dough hook still spins. Which part do u think I broke? And how do I work out which model she is please?

This was an excellent summary of the steps involved. I have now re-greased the gearbox and it is a lot quieter. Could I suggest one change to the steps involved? It concerns step 5; Removing the dog nut with a spanner. The suggestion is to get another person to hold the K-Beater attachment part still whilst unscrewing the dog nut. This I found impossible due to the gearing which makes it impossible to hold the K-beater attachment part still!! I found using a piece of dressed timber about 120 mm long (and 15 mm wide x 10 mm high) and placing it between the K-beater attachment part and the frame of the machine, easily allowed the dog nut to be undone. Replacement was simply putting the timber the other side to enable tightening up. (Not over tight mind). Great set of instructions. Thankyou.
