This guide explains how to open the mouse and clean the scrolling wheel. It is illustrated with pictures I took in real repair situation.

You will have 3 screws to take apart. in order to open the mouse. The first one is in the battery compartment, and when the mouse has never been opened, two other ones are hidden under the maker label, just cut crosswise, as you can see on the picture upper-right. Of course, when the mouse has been opened once, the screws show, as here on the left.

If the mouse has never been opened, force your screwdriver through the crosses pointed by the arrows on the upper-right picture, and unscrew normally.

Now you can take apart the cover from the "sole" of your mouse.

So now you can see the guts of your mouse. Mine was very dirty: the dust had gathered and compressed into hard felt.

Here you can see how it works. The pink arrows point on a led source, a receiver is fixed symmetrically on the other side of the wheel, and the light is interrupted by the spoked wheel when you roll it... except that no light passes through when the wheel is too dirty.

So you have to unclog the light path. When it is so dirty, you have to take the wheel out, because there is more dirt under the wheel in its U-shaped socket than what you see *on* it, as you can see on the middle picture.

First, move *gently* out of the rim the spring pointed by the yellow arrow on the left picture, and let it rest on the left. Beware not to pull it out of its axis.

Then you will need a tool (tweezers or so) to grasp the dirt out of the plastic support of the wheel. I used a crustacean/snail two-teethed fork ;-) . When done, blow out the last dirt particles.

When you have well cleaned the support of the wheel and the wheel itself, click carefully the wheel back in place.

Don't forget to move back the spring in its original position in the rim of the wheel.

You can now put back together the two parts of the mouse, and fasten them with the 3 screws
