The touch pad controls cursor movement and is one of the most used parts of the laptop. It is exposed to frequent wear and tear and may need replacement.

Turn the laptop upside-down and remove the following screws using a Phillips #0 driver:
-
Two 9.5 mm screws in the middle of the back edge, and one 9.5 mm screw in the right edge
-
Two 4.3 mm screws in the back corners
-
One 17.5 mm screw at the left edge near the optical drive
-
Three 4.3 mm screws in the front edge
-
-
-
Invert the laptop in order to gain access to the ribbons.
-
Remove each ribbon by flipping the small white plastic flap up and gently pulling on the ribbon.
-
-
-
Now that the ribbons have been detached from the bottom cover, carefully remove the keyboard plate cover. Once it has been removed, place it in a safe and moisture free area so it does not get damaged.
Yes and you have to put lotion on
Now, that is a stupid question! Of course! As I am working on 551M, I naturally have to have nails painted orange, with blue accents!
that boy ain't right

Unscrew the three 5.5 mm Phillips #0 screws with the Phillips #0 Screwdriver.

Using the Phillips #0 Screwdriver, unscrew the 5.5 mm Phillips #0 screw that holds the spacer in place.

-
-
Use the Phillips #0 Screwdriver to unscrew the 3.2 mm Phillips #0 screw which attaches the WiFi card to the motherboard.
-
-
-
Remove each of the two small antenna connections by disconnecting one wire at a time. Each wire should easily unsnap from the Wifi card.
This computer uses a Mini PCIe slot card, as you can see in the photo's. You can órder almost any card, from either FENVI brand (Intel) or Artheros (Qualcomm), just make certain you order a card that specifically says it is a HALF HEIGHT Mini PCI-e card. Intel stop producing cards like this after the 7265HMW card but other brands make compatible cards. In the Intel design, any card that ends in 'HMW' is a card that is a mini PCIe card. If you see any other combination of letters then it is not likely to be compatible.
If you have any questions, ask the vendor if the card is compatible with your computer.

Remove the battery from the laptop by applying pressure on both ends and lifting it out of the case.

-
With the Phillips #0 Screwdriver, remove the nine 5.5 mm Phillips #0 screws which hold the motherboard in place.
-
-
-
Remove the wires by easily pulling them parallel to the motherboard's surface.
You should never pull plugs out by the wires themselves. ALWAYS use a tool to release the plug itself by inserting a spudger between the plug and socket, and gently easing it out. Pulling by the wires risks damaging the wires, or ripping the socket off the motherboard.

-
Remove the LCD display connection by gently pulling on the attached wire.
-
Gently lift any tape that may be holding the connection.
If the tape is removed when disconnecting, be SUPER sure that the connector is the right way before reconnecting. I managed to brake this connector by putting it in the wrong way! Both sides look very similar.

I agree with Mr Serra - you wouldn't need to touch the Motherboard/hard drive.
People, if you take just two seconds to think about it, the process described is plainly one that shows how to remove ALL the parts, and all you have to do is take note of the ones that are relevant to what you want to do, and ignore the rest.
Can't believe you are whining about being given extra FREE information that you might want in the future.
Too quick to criticise.
i 100% agree @nononsense

screw assignments are definitely wrong. I swapped the red and the green, as per comment above, and kept the blue as-is.

Thanks everyone. It does seem like someone got their screws mixed up when they wrote this guide. I’ve made some changes as you all suggested, so the screw placements should be more accurate now. If anyone with this laptop could verify the screw measurements with a digital caliper, that’d also be very helpful.
