The optical drive allows for insertion of DVDs and CDs. It is fairly common for optical drives to malfunction or break due to their various moving parts. The Acer Aspire 5741-5698 has an optical drive that is easily removed if you follow this guide properly.

Disconnect the laptop from the power source.
Turn the laptop over so the bottom is facing up.

Insert the back side of the spudger into the crack of the optical drive.
Pop the optical drive out of place with the spudger.

Remove the optical drive with your hands by pulling straight outwards.
Replace the old optical drive with a new one.
