Background and Identification
Part of the EF lens family, the EF 35-105mm, f/4.5-f/5.6 is an interchangeable EF mount, wide-to-normal zoom lens manufactured by Canon. The f/4.5 -f/5.6 aperture version of this lens was released in 1991, whereas the original lens, with an aperture of f/3.5-f/4.5, was released in 1987. Although designed to be a budget lens, the EF 35-105mm with an aperture of f/4.5-f/5.6 works well on several high-end Canon EOS bodies, including in the EOS 7D Mark II, EOS 5F Mark III, and the EOS-1D X, aiding in the camera’s autofocusing (AF) capabilities. Although their aperture ranges from f/4.5 - f/5.6, these lenses were treated as f/8 lenses limiting AF functionality to the center point (and surrounding four points if AF Point Expansion is enabled. The Canon EF 35-105mm, f/4.5 - f/5.6 is the only lens that is treated this way. All other lenses must have an extender attached, which is a teleconverter lens made by Canon to use between any compatible EF type lens and any of the EOS line cameras.
