iMac not booting - black screen, no power light, ticking sound

Hi!

My 2006 intel core 2 duo iMac is no longer booting. It was working fine up until about a week ago when I last used it. Nothing happens when clicking/holding/tapping/whatever the power button on the back. Screen is black, no power light comes on, no boot up sound.

One thing I notice is a low, ticking sound - sounds almost like the sound from an analog clock, but the ticking comes at irregular intervals. I can hear the sound as soon as put the power cord into the wall outlet, so I can hardly imagine it is coming from the hard drive, since the computer is not even turned on.

What could the problem possibly be?

Could be your power supply - open it and check the LED diagnostic lights.

I just had the same thing---worked fine, then left it snoozing for a long time during the summer in an unairconditioned room. I woke it up periodically, but never completely powered down.

I tried to wake it up a few weeks ago and got the same symptoms you listed. I was hoping it was simply the power supply, sent it out for a diagnosis and turned out to be the logic board.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Sounds like bad capacitors. Very common for these units. You may need to pull the Logic board to check them out. Look for capacitors with bulging tops There are kits available to do the repair. In the mean time, you can pull the hard drive and using a special adaptor to connect another Mac you can save your DATA.

Just acquired an 20" iMac EMC 2118 which was completely dead, absolutely nothing on power up. Dismantled and cleaned it then assembled the parts on the bench. Power supply was clicking and when checked it with a meter it put out zero volts. Swapped this for a PSU from a 17" A1144 (which I happen to have). The 20" now works fine. The 2 PSU's have totally different part numbers (both Apple and Celetronix) but they are identical. I took an age to check the components with a magnifier to make sure. Now all I need to do is to figure what is the problem with the original PSU and what is causing the clicking. The capacitors look fine but I think I will change them anyway.
