Why does my MacBook hard crash after opening lid?

I have a M1 Macbook Pro 14" (2021) that I have been using for 4 years. For a long time, I simply used the OS it came out of the box with (macOS 12.1). It never gave any issues and I was too lazy to update it. One day I simply opened the lid of my macbook and tried to use Touch ID to open lock screen. After several attempts of trying to use Touch ID (it has a tendency to not work first time), I realized my mac froze and then a hard crash occurred (apple logo flashed).

I tried to force restart which led me to the black screen with exclamation mark. There was no trackpad haptic, power button was unresponsive, MagSafe LED did not work. Since I didn't have a secondary mac for a DFU restore, I simply kept my mac in isolation for a while and didn't touch it. 2 days later I plugged my mac in using Magsafe and the LED lit up.

After a full charge, I opened my macbook which showed how it restarted due to a problem. The logs said it was a kernel panic. After digging, i decided to update my OS to the latest version (macOS Tahoe 26.5.2). I thought it would fix every problem. However a few days later, the same thing happened. I opened the lid, spammed Touch ID for it to register, and then it simply hard crashed and I had to wait another 2 days for it to boot up again (same symptoms). This time there was no kernel log reports and my mac thinks absolutely nothing went wrong (I checked console and there was no crash logs or anything)

The only thing I found using the command
pmset -g log | grep -E "Failure|Sleep|Wake"

was:

What is wrong with my macbook? Is it a Touch ID issue or some other hardware/ software related problem?

Things to keep in mind:

1. I installed battery toolkit and used it in this month. I never had any issues with battery but decided to use it since my capacity was 85%. Cycle count is at 483. Condition is normal

2. I did not perform a full wipe when updating my OS from 12.1 to 26.5.2

3. After my macbook booted up, there were no other problems and it worked as intended.

4. Apple diagnostics says there is nothing wrong with any of my hardware (including Touch ID and Battery)

Update 1: Did a workaround by disabling lock screen entirely and removing touch ID as they were usually the causes of hard crash. After leaving my mac overnight with lid closed (not shutdown), it was simply dead right off the bat. I digged up some logs using the same command as before:

Note that I never even touched the Touch ID this time. I simply shut it down and before I even got the chance to do anything, it started right back up.

To be clear, now with the updated macOS you are still getting sporadic problems? Do you have any anti-virus and malware App installed beyond what Apple offers? You may want to install one more so if you are a heavy Internet user that tends to seek out the extreme gaming space.

While the battery may appear to still have life in it and not at the expected lifetime max of 1000 cycles. Batteries don't read the fine print! 4 years if mostly plugged in is about its limit more so when running hard gaming or video work.

I would try running diagnostics to see if something popped there, it's possible the firmware has an issue which would require DFU to restore.

I ran diagnostics as you said. I tested everything and it said there were no problems (even with Touch ID).

another thing to note is that I dont game on this mac. The only demanding task I do on this mac is running a game server (minecraft, terraria). I only run these servers for about a 2 months(not 24/7) in a year before i switch back to casual use (chrome youtube. discord)

for a sort of workaround, i decided to disable Touch ID and lock screen entirely as it mainly happens when i open the lid and try authorising with my fingerprint.

Update: I opened my mac today to be greeted with a completely dead mac (No trackpad haptic and power button was unresponsive). This time instead of waiting like 2 days, I simply plugged it in even though there was no Magsafe led.

However, this time i was able to do a force restart after it was plugged in for about 10 mins. After the force restart, the mac worked completely fine and had no crash reports or anything. I digged up some logs using the aforementioned command, and found out that it somehow went from 75% charge down to 69%. How does it lose charge in a literal dead state? What problem does my mac have and is it possible to diagnose it at home (i dont want to pay absurd amounts for a repair)

Update 2: I tried shutting down my mac so I could go back into apple diagnostics to hopefully see if it catches something. After shutting it down and waiting for a few seconds, it just randomly turned on by itself again. This time it said my mac restarted due to a problem and I was able to get a crash report.

(I put edited it into the original post as comments have a letter limit)

@cristianor16180 - The crash reports show memory addresses which could be a corrupted OS, App or hardware.

Diagnostics is not a complete test of everything so not catching the problem just means it's a deeper issue.

Ok, how to break down the problem? Having a bootable external drive is my first goto as here we can plug in the system and restarting the system to use the external drive over the internal that removes some OS try- of issues and any misbehaving App as they won't be on the external. If that's still failing that's a very strong sign the logic board it's self has an issue and your battery maybe also an issue.

I was finally able to find a conclusive discovery. I think it is my Security Enclave that is failing. Now I can consistently trigger SEP kernel panics by simply trying to turn off FileVault. Here are some logs I found:

-i panic -rw-rw-rw-@ 1 root _analyticsusers 1290850 Jul 18 19:39 panic-full-2026-07-18-193917.0002.panic -rw-rw-rw-@ 1 root _analyticsusers 1498916 Jul 18 19:24 panic-full-2026-07-18-192431.0002.panic -rw-rw-rw-@ 1 root _analyticsusers 1353985 Jul 18 19:09 panic-full-2026-07-18-190906.0002.panic -rw-rw-rw-@ 1 root _analyticsusers 227455 Jul 18 14:23 panic-full-2026-07-18-142302.0002.panic -rw-rw-rw-@ 1 root _analyticsusers 801995 Jul 13 16:54 panic-full-1976-04-01-072426.0002.panic

Last panic is pretty huge as I found out its the same panic:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/panic-full-1976-04-01-072426.0002.panic: "panicString" : "panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffe00196235ec): SEP Panic: :sars\/sars:

Im still not sure if its a hardware or firmware issue. I'll have to try a DFU restore and check.

2 days ago my MacBook Pro M3 Pro was working completely fine. I've had it for around 1.5 years with no issues, then suddenly it started flickering the Apple logo and showing support.apple.com/mac/restore.

I tried a DFU revive and restore, didnt work. Tried reinstalling macOS Tahoe. It worked perfectly for 5-7 hours, then the problem came back. The weird thing is it can fail to boot for a while, then suddenly boot normally and work like nothing is wrong, until it randomly crashes again.

I thought Tahoe was the issue, so yesterday I completely erased the Mac and installed Sequoia. Same thing: worked perfectly for hours, then the restore problem came back.

I'm actually using the Mac to write this right now, but 5 mins ago it crashed 3 times in a row. My panic logs show the exact same SEP Panic: :sars/sars and AppleSEPManager as yours.

Did you ever figure out if yours was a hardware/SEP issue or firmware? Did DFU fix it?
