How to open HP Envy 4 and change the RAM and HDD?

I have recently bought a HP Envy 4 and wanted to upgrade the harddisk to a SSD and also upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB. After removing all the obvious screws on the bottom of the laptop, the bottom cover still could not be removed. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Hi I own a Envy 4 and it is much simpler than described above.

You just have to remove the 12 bottom screws. Open up and you access everything.

I choosed to keep the mechanical drive and replaced the 32gB msata readyboost drive with a 180 GB Intel 530 mSata drive. I also replaced the RAM with 2x8 GB RAM from Kingston.

It took about 15 minutes to replace the hardware. Then I booted up from an external DVD-player with a Windows 7 DVD in it. In advanced mode I disabled all drives on HD 0.

I then installed Windows on HD 1. Remember to have a backup on all your files before, since they will be lost otherwise.

When that was done I partitioned HD 1 as one partition.

I now have an Ultrabook with 180 GB C: and a 500GB D: and with 16 GB RAM.

This really does it, its really superfast to work with. The Windows experience index on hdd is 7,9 and 7,3 on RAM.

A tip also is to replace the WiFi card at the same time with an Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 7260. I´m about to do that since the network card in my model(1090eo) didnt have WiDi. I will at the same time get much faster network transactions.

Hi "Neccros. There is no advanced BIOS setup, so I suppose you are thinking of "Advanced mode" in Windows setup - Thats an option that comes up when installing from a Win7 DVD. From there you can choose to format and disable partitions.

When I tried I had to disable drive 0 to be able to install Windows on drive 1 (The Msata SSD drive). After install, I used Aomei Partition Assistant standard edition (free) to enable and partition drive 0.

Im not sure but I dont think I used any tools to open up the bottom.

I think I started at the back (At the air inlet) and then worked my way around.

No tabs were broken.

Hi Rickard,

Please let me know did the Intel WiDi start working when you replaced the Wi-fi card?

Thank you.

Rickard, Two things, how did you get into the "advanced" bios section?? and what tool did you use to open up the bottom w/o breaking the tabs??

I need to open my Envy 4T-1200 and do not want to buy a new bottom plate but I want to learn a good way of opening the laptop

There is an Advanced BIOS section... There is a forum with a poll of people that got into it. Its tricky but is possible...

What the advanced settings lets you choose what graphics card your system uses by default or hybrid which is the switchable setting. Also the advanced section has settings for CPU and power settings and some other stuff, I cant recall everything off hand.

The easier way -- can somebody confirm this works for the HP Envy 4-1015dx model?

kok leong Teo, here is what the manual says to do :"Before removing the hard drive or SSD, follow these steps:

1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.

2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer.

3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet

and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer.

4. Remove the display panel.

5. Remove the base enclosure.

6. Disconnect the battery cable.

Remove the hard drive:

1. Disconnect the hard drive cable from the system board, and then remove the 4 screws

securing the hard drive to the top cover.

2. Remove the hard drive.

3. Remove the hard drive connector cable. Remove the 4 screws securing the hard drive bracket to the hard drive, and then remove the hard drive bracket.

4. Remove the hard drive.

Reverse these procedures to reassemble and install the hard drive.

Download the service and maintenance manual from here. It will give you all the details. Hope this helps, good luck.

robbyoconner -

I'm would like to upgrade my RAM in my HP 4-1115dx from 4 GBs of RAM to 16 GBs, but I noticed that the laptop bottom gets a little warm after running for a while. Does your laptop have any abnormal heating issues after your upgrade to 16 GBs of RAM?
