i recently ran across a macbook thats in very good looking condition, when i turn it on it sounds up and comes on quick but a dull gray screen pops on with a blinking folder. i would love to get this up and running what are the steps to solving this problem.

The machine is telling you it can not find a valid OS (Hard Drive). You should be able to boot to the CD/DVD drive with a valid OS install disk. These also have hardware test disks that can help identify problems. . . Could be as easy as a disconnected/missing HD or as complicated as damage to the drive connector, ribbon cable or logic board.
