Black Screen, do I need to replace the screen?

My A2338 MacBook Pro suddenly stopped working last week. The screen went black, I could see my drive when starting up, see the loading bar etc. But the system would not boot. I did a full restore, and the computer is working fine with an external monitor. When the MacBook is closed, and I open it, I can briefly see the screen before the screen goes black. My Mac repair shop said I needed a full screen replacement, but given the screen flashes on for a second, I’m wondering if there is some sort of connection issue.

Take a strong flashlight place it on the screen at a sharp angle you should see the faint images of your icons, are you able to?

Nope flashlight doesn’t show anything, that backlight appears to be on.

@davidwilli13084 - So no visible images then, that tells me the video data feed is not working. In a dark room do you see a slight glow from the display? That would be the backlight.

Yes, slight glow is present from the backlight.

@davidwilli13084 - Do you live in an arid environment with lots of grit/sand blowing about? If you do then it's possible the problem you are facing is what is called DustGate which is where the grit/sand has found its way into the ribbon area puncturing or eroding the ribbon insulation so the fine lines are damaged or shorted out.

It is possible to fix the cables in some cases, otherwise you'll need a new display assembly and be aggressive in keeping the system clean MacBook Pro 13" Dust-Gate Preventive Cleaning

Not very dusty, will be replacing the screen tomorrow.
