Uses Cathode Ray Tube Technology. Old Monitors and Televisions used to use this display type for many years. Very dangerous to work with, but it is possible for smaller fixes.

sylvania-src2213x colaxial input is not working

Hi guys. My little cousin has a N64 and it looked terrible on his family's lcd, so I bought him a sylvania-src2213x. When I set it up yesterday it worked fine, it looked awesome and we had a awesome golden eye tournament. But today my aunt calls me and says the TV does not work. My little cousin shows me the TV, it works fine its on channel 3 but then he powers on the N64. The screen turns black and white lines go everywhere (like a screensaver). The sound it still on but the screen looks like it is having a heart attack. I know it was not the N64 because when plugged back into the lcd, It worked fine. I do not know what to do, this has never happened with my Panasonic pv-m2058!

Just want to say, after this I am only buying Panasonic tv's! If you want a good crt for retro games, get a Panasonic. My main crt is a 1998 Panasonic pv-m2058 which is a family original and has had no issues.

Hi @powerpcuser, based on my experience, working with CRT units, safety is absolutely critical. Unlike modern flat panels, CRTs carry very high voltages and can store dangerous energy even when unplugged.

⚡ CRT Safety Essentials

  • High voltage risk: CRTs can hold up to 25–30 kV in the tube and flyback transformer. Even after unplugging, the tube and capacitors may retain charge for hours or days. Always discharge the CRT anode properly before working near the tube.
  • Proper discharge technique: Use a high‑voltage probe or insulated screwdriver with a grounding wire attached to chassis ground. Never attempt discharge with bare hands or uninsulated tools. Keep one hand behind your back to avoid current passing through your chest.
  • Capacitor safety: Power supply electrolytic capacitors can store lethal energy. Discharge them with a resistor (not a direct short) to avoid sparks and damage.
  • Physical hazards: CRT glass is under vacuum; if cracked, it can implode. Handle the tube carefully and wear safety glasses when working around it.
  • Work environment: Use an insulated workbench, avoid metal jewelry, and keep children or pets away. Always double‑check that the unit is unplugged before starting.

🔧 Common Age‑Related Problems

  • Dry solder joints: Heat cycles cause solder to crack or lose conductivity.
    • Symptoms: intermittent power, distorted video, or sound dropouts.
    • Fix: reflow solder on high‑stress areas (power supply, flyback transformer, vertical IC pins).
  • Aging electrolytic capacitors: Capacitors dry out, lose capacitance, or leak.
  • Symptoms: vertical collapse (thin horizontal line), unstable colors, humming audio, or difficulty powering on.
  • Fix: replace with modern low‑ESR capacitors of equal or slightly higher voltage rating.

🛠️ Practical Repair Tips

  • Inspect the power supply board first — it’s the most common failure point.
  • Use a magnifying glass to spot cracked solder joints around large components.
  • Replace capacitors in the vertical deflection circuit and power supply filter as preventive maintenance.
  • If restoring for retro gaming or VHS playback, calibrate the geometry and convergence after repairs.

Thank you so much Augustine, I am pretty sure it is an aging capacitor. And yes, I am aware of the dangers of a crt (I have worked on crt tv's before). Thank you so much though!

Hi @powerpcuser

Just to add to the above, here's the service manual that may help
