Why doesn't it boot anymore? All I get is a black screen!

Three weeks of pleasure working on this perfect machine ended last night in a non-bootable Quadcore iMac 27". Only black screen. I hear the HD spinning and also the DVD drive works, but other than that: dead.

Tried startup with c,d, command+option+p+r: nothing. Mouseclick on startup: CD doesn't eject. Took all additional equipment off and only a USB keyboard: nothing. I got this machine a month ago so I still have warranty, but if there is a simple solution I rather do that than bringing it to the shop for repair or replacement with a new one.

I run Logic Studio 8, ProTools 8.0.3., Final Cut Studio 9 and Adobe CS3.

Please advise.

Man, 27" iMacs have been a nightmare for many Apple customers!

I am unaware of any solutions that don't involve opening up the machine, which will probably void your warranty. It really would be in your long-term best interest to get Apple to replace your machine with a working one.

Sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear.

Have it back now. They resetted the CMOS. New problem in return: No Airport card installed...

No airport card sounds like another warranty issue

I have exactly the same problem. 27 inch i7 iMac. It was in sleep mode and we had a power failure and now it's got a black screen.

Taking it in to the local service centre tomorrow.

My experience seems to be similar to mediathology's problem description.

I have my 27-inch, Intel core i7 iMac plugged into a multi-outlet, switched, surge-suppressor power strip that is plugged into an APC UPS. At night I shut down the iMac and switch off the power strip. The iMac worked well for the first two days.

On the morning of the 3rd day, It would not start, and there was no startup chime. I made several tries: switch off the power strip, wait a while, turn the power strip back on, then press the iMac's power button. Each time, I could hear the HD start spinning and doing several seek operations. After that, nothing happened.

I then did a forced iMac hardware shutdown (press and hold the iMac's power button for 10 to 30 seconds until the iMac shuts down). I heard the HD stop spinning. After a few seconds, I pressed the power button, and the iMac started right up as if nothing had ever happened.

The problem occurred again on the 10th, the 25th and the 34th days. Each time, it showed the same symptoms and the same response to the forced iMac hardware shutdown.

I've called Apple twice. The first tech I spoke with issued a case number and gave me some suggestions to avoid the problem (basically, don't shut down). On the second occasion, the tech insisted on giving me a new case number, and suggested I take my iMac to the nearest authorized repair shop to have it checked.

After the fourth occurrence, I downloaded both of Apple's newly released firmware updates and installed them along with the OS X 10.6.3 update. One of the firmware updates is supposed to address a problem where the screen won't light up. I haven't seen any more details, so I don't know if this problem is related to the not-starting-up problem.

That was nine days ago. I am currently waiting to see if the problem happens again. If not, then good. If it does, I will have to call Apple again, then take it to the service shop (35 miles away).

Here's hoping.

Extending your warranty for another 2 years by buying AppleCare would not be out of line.

Yes, thanks, it is a very good idea. I did buy Applecare when I bought my iMac, and probably should have mentioned it above.

The company where I work has over a thousand Macs, and their policy is to buy Applecare for every Mac they purchase.

The black screen was solved by a CMOS reset. Unfortunately the technician who worked on my iMac forgot to put back the cable for the AirPort card.... All good now!
