iMac Pro SSDs don't work with Mac Pro 2019 error 4042

Hi guys, I bought a Mac Pro 2019 from a friend and here is the specs (16 core xeon, 128GB Apple OEM RAM and AMD Radeon Pro W5500X) BUT NO SSD.

  • I installed a matching pair of iMac Pro SSDs but it still gives the same error 4042 as if there is no SSD detected.

When conencted to power it's dead but it makes a very low click sound when disconnected and it does enters into DFU Mode, but when trying to restore it using Apple Configurator tool it stucks for 5 minutes or so then throw an error as shown below :

Lastly do you think buying a used Mac Pro 2019's SSD fix this issues ?

Any help is appreciated

Thank you very much everyone

You can’t use recovered modules as the low level prep of the previous system precludes it. A virgin set of modules is needed and then you need to follow this guide Uninstall and install SSD modules on Mac Pro. In addition one module is unique with its IPL code present so make sure you’ve noted which is the 0 module and placed it in the correct bay.

Thank you very much, so virgin SSDs (never used modules NAND) is required for successful restoration of the T2 chip firmware and then following Apple steps.

Overall, can't buy a used Mac Pro 2019 SSDs (matching modules or pulled out from working system) online and restore the firmware by Apple Configurator Tool ?

@ali34101 - There are a few outfits that make the modules. If you just want deeper storage maybe this would be better OWC Solid State Drives

If you need as fast as possible then replacing the Flash Modules

Modules is the other direction but don't over do it! Depending on your workflow most people only need 1TB and then they use external RAID drives for their sizable storage. I have an older 2013 system which I have a 2TB internal SSD blade drive and three external RAID drives my primary is a M.2 based unit and the other two are SATA HDD based.

Apple sells a 2TB kit now 2TB SSD Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro but it's way too costly for most of us! Here's one option BeetsTech - MacPro Flash Storage

There are a few issues that prevent re-use the modules are linked to the given systems T2 chip (serialized) Which stops you without the ability to completely zero the drive.

The other is even that doesn't get you over the IPL code which is present on one unit and that unit needs to be in the correct bay to work.

So while your system only has 512GB which maybe enough for basic App usage, it won't offer enough for graphical work like photo editing or object based drawing like CAD/CAM or large artist drawing. Then you have music and video production either editing or rendering which needs deep fast storage.

I had setup one system for a PhD grad who was into Protean folding! He programmed something up to help run through different folding patterns to line up with antigens. That as much as he would explain to me!

He ran it so hard I had to improve the modules cooling as they would overheat! Just the cache and scratch files. We finally created a sizable RAM drive which resolved the overheating.

Thanks I appreciate your help, sure once I get this Mac Pro running after buying the internal OEM SSD will buy a RAID card from OWC and I need this Mac Pro for music production (Pro Tools and Apple Logic Pro X) also for VM special work and for Windows.

Thanks and God Bless you !
