How are you trying to connect to the internet, WiFi or Ethernet?
Does the laptop connect to the network modem or router OK?

To add to Jayeff question, are there any other computers in the home or where you are trying to connect working?
If they are, are you sharing the came connection path?
Ask them how they are connecting and see if the settings match between the two systems.
