The Hitachi hard drive is not connecting to the computer, although it makes a sound. It does not appear on the computer.

What is the make and model number of the PC or the motherboard if a custom build, that you're trying to connect the HDD to?
Have you tried connecting the drive to a different sata port on the motherboard?
Have you tried using a different known working sata cable and see if that worked?
