Was the phone dropped at all or did it get wet?
Since it was dropped chances are that there's internal damage to the display and it will have to be replaced.
Here's the ThinkPhone Level 2 Repair Manual that will help you to replace them screen. It shows everything that you need to know e.g. tools required, procedures, part numbers for parts etc.
