Why is the MacBook screen blank when the display cable is connected?

For context, I bought a 2nd hand MacBook Pro M2 from a seller at a cheap price with a caveat, she accidentally poured juice on the keyboard some time ago.

After cleaning all the visible corrosion and putting everything back together, I turned it on and it just chimes but nothing will appear on the display and the touchbar. I connected it to an external monitor and there is nothing as well.

It works for me sometimes so I tried doing a DFU mode restore/revive but it won't complete the process, saying that it has stopped because the MacBook was not responding.

Until.... I tinkered with the MacBook again the other day and accidentally put it together without connecting the display cable. When I powered it on, the touchbar appeared and when I connected it to an external monitor, it displayed the login screen. IT WORKS!

However, as an experiment, I connected the display cable again, it would just chime and not work again.

So I left the display cable disconnected and have since activated and erased the MacBook with the seller's help and installed the latest MacOS.

Any ideas on how to make the screen work? I will try to get a new display cable and replace the old one, which does not look good even after cleaning. Hope this works.

But appreciate your inputs. Thanks!

Sound from your description the display it's self and/or the connection to the logic board still has damage. You'll need to physically inspect carefully the connectors contacts on both sides to see if any are missing or damaged. You might try replacing the cable, but that would more likely be severed Vs shorted so I don't think that will help here. Which then aims us at the most likely the display assembly needs replacing MacBook Pro 13" (A2338) Display Assembly and here's the guide MacBook Pro 13インチ 2022 (M2) ディスプレイアセンブリの交換

Thanks, Dan! I actually put replaced the display assembly with a fully working display assembly pulled out from another MacBook A2338 but it still did not work.

@patsaquino - Did you inspect the connections? Both the main logic board and the iDP cable which connects between logic board and the T-CON board which is part of the display assembly. You may want to replace the iDP cable if you haven't you'll need to remove the logic board to get the the logic board side of the iDP cable. Reference Steps 15 ~ 17.

Hi Dan. Are the flex cables for the late 2020 M1 MBP and the 2020 M2 MBP compatible or not? I read that of the M2 is longer.

Also, I replaced the original flex cable with another and made sure that the connector on the display screen is also clean. However, nothing still appears on the screen. I connected the MBP to an external monitor and confirmed though that the Photobooth camera is working.

Thanks.

@patsaquino - There are four cables here! The backlight cable, two LCD panel cables these connect between the T-CON logic board and the main part of the lid and it’s these cables which get damaged. The last cable is the only true replaceable cable which almost never fails (just liquid damage). Seen in Steps 16 & 17 in the guide.

The original issue with the LCD cables was with the 2016 & 2017 systems when Apple made the backlight cable a bit short. The only other risk is either mechanical damage from a drop or forgetting something resting near the hing area so when you close the lid you crush it into the chin plat cutting the ribbons. That then leaves the grit issue where sand erodes the insulation exposing the copper lines shorting or just wearing them out. Sadly these three cables are not replaceable at best you might do a temporary patch but these patches just don’t hold up.

Bottom line new display assembly time.

Hi Dan. The pins on the original LCD flex cable are corroded and incomplete, so I was thinking of replacing it first before buying the whole assembly. I have a spare flex cable from an 2020 MBP M1 which I installed but did not work.

Ifixit also showed that the 2022 MBP M2 LCD flex cable is not compatible with any other MacBooks. So is this true? I read that of the M2 is longer.

Thanks again for your inputs.

I'm guessing the problem is that something shorted in the screen connector, causing the MacBook to not boot into the OS. You would want to check the cable connectors as liquid usually stays in those tiny connectors and refuse to dry for a long time. It didn't help that the backlight requires pretty high voltage which just causes corrosion faster. Use a toothbrush dipped in isopropyl alcohol and brush the connector carefully, and don't apply too much force. It should be able to clean some of the corrosion that's causing a short and maybe make the MacBook work again. Don't apply too much force, though. You might bend the pins in the connector.

Also check the motherboard for any capacitors or components missing. Liquid damage usually corrodes the solder and makes them weak and stuff might fall off, causing a nonfunctional screen.

If all fails then you'll have to accept that the motherboard is broke due to juice damage and use it like a clam. But I'm hoping it wouldn't have to come down to that. The fact that it boots and connects to an external monitor is suggesting that it works.

EDIT: the motherboard side of the connector also needs to be cleaned as well.
This thing under the screen flex cable press connector:

Just use a toothbrush dipped in ispropyl alcohol to gently brush the socket. It should get rid of most of the corrosion.

Thanks, Leo. The flex cable does look a bit corroded so I'll clean it thoroughly as suggested.

No problem. Just remember to clean the motherboard side of the press connector as well.

Hi. I used a clean flex cable and the connector on the screen is also clean. However, nothing still appears on the screen. I connected the MBP to an external monitor and confirmed though that the Photobooth camera is working.

さんによる

@patsaquino okay... maybe shine a flashlight onto the screen and see if it shows anything. In some cases liquid damage might lead to a nonfunctional backlight but the screen would still work.

さんによる

The worst case is that the IC that manages the onboard screen is corroded or shorted, or the components that are responsible for it is corroded. With liquid damage nobody can be sure. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop and see if the technicians there can identify the problem. I only know so much about motherboards, so I can't really help much.
