Why cant I get a boot menu display on extrnal display on headless mac?

I have a headless (broken screen) macbook which I was able to reinstall Mac-os onto using an external display, however when attempting to install Linux, guides show that you need to hold the option key in order to choose to boot from a USB, however when I attempt to do this on with an external display, I do not get an image on the display. It works fine in mac-os however had some issues with artifacts in the past so I am wondering if I am doing something wrong, it is an issue with the Macbook or it cannot display the boot menu on external displays.

MacBooks typically don’t show the boot menu (Option key) on external displays during startup because the external GPU output initializes only after macOS loads. Since your internal screen is broken, you can't see the boot picker. This is a hardware limitation. A workaround is using screen sharing, target disk mode, or replacing the internal display to view the boot menu.

Thank you for your reply, I will try this asap, how do I use target disk mode to install another operating system? replacing the internal display is a last resort option due to the macbooks age.

Within the display lid is a magnet which mates up with a Hall sensor to identify when the display is down. Most of the time this is to save power by disabling the display power. It is also used to identify the primary display. By default it's the internal, but when the external is desired the closed lid tells the logic to pump the video to the external. We refer this as Clamshell Mode.

But here we have no lid to tell the logic to pump the video to the external so none of the first phases of system booting up are seen. You will need to fake the system out by placing a rare earth magnet on the uppercase where the lids magnet would mate with the Hall sensor.

To help locate the sensor here's an image on it

So placing the magnet about the same distance forward along the palm rest of the distance between the USB-C ports should hit it.

Thank you for your reply, I misworded the original post and I would like to clarify that that screen Is still connected to the Macbook and I will try this asap with just closing the screen.

@cperson - Just picking up the other issue, installing a different OS

You don't need to run Target Disk Mode to do that as that won't really help. What is the OS you want to install? If it's MacOS just launch recovery or what I prefer is download the OS directly from Apples servers How to download and install macOS. If you want something newer that what your system will access just download the newest and then you can install OpenCore Legacy Patcher to then go higher, but your hardware (RAM & Storage) may limit you.

If you want MS Windows you can run it within MacOS using BootCamp

@danj I was trying to install linux onto my mac just to clarify.

@cperson - OK, There are a few different Linux builds some are a bit easier than others to install. Basically, you can follow this guide Preparing your Mac for Linux installation.

@danj It tells me to hold down the "option" key to go into the boot menu, however when I do this my external display does not display anything. Will clamshell mode help? or is there something else I can do to get it to display the startup menu?

Hey, I’ve been through something similar, so I get how annoying this can be. Unfortunately, older MacBooks (especially Intel-based ones) don’t always mirror the boot menu (like when you hold the Option key) to an external display right away — the built-in screen usually has to initialize first, even if it's broken. That’s likely why you’re not seeing anything during startup, even though it works fine once macOS loads.

One workaround some people try is closing the lid after the chime while the Option key is still held — this sometimes forces the Mac to use only the external display (called "clamshell mode"). Not a guarantee, but worth a shot.

Another approach: You could try setting the USB stick as the startup disk from within macOS before rebooting. Go to System Preferences > Startup Disk, select the Linux USB, and restart — that way, it skips the Option menu.

But yeah, sadly, Macs aren't always great about headless setups during boot. Hope one of those tips helps!
