Makita 4" Corded Angle Grinder 9501B - Removing Back Cover for Service

I cannot get the plastic rear cover off the main body.

I have removed the ON/OFF switch button so the switch lever can move freely.

Something else seems to prevent the cover from coming off.

Does anyone know how to get it off?

If I understand correctly you are trying to get the smaller plastic cover off that has the power cord running through it? It should be held in place with some screws that need removed and occasionally the cords inside can catch and need to be worked to release the cover. Sometimes with age and wear it is necessary to wedge and pry the plastic pieces apart after ensuring all the screws are removed. I have worked on a few Makita grinders at my job but not the 9501B specifically. Very rarely on some models of different brands I have found the rear plastic covers held in place by the same screws that secure the field coil, and they require the gear housing to be removed along with the armature after removing the brushes to get at them, but like I said this is a very rare circumstance.

Here is the link to the parts breakdown that I hope can help you.

Thank you Ken, grateful to hear from someone who has experienced the challenge. Thank you also for the teardown diagram - I did find it on the web before I started the work of servicing the grinder. I had to disassemble the grinder so I could get the armature in the lathe to skim the badly scoured commutator. The unit had been run without service until the carbon brushes wore down to the beryllium springs! I cannot see any other screws holding on the small plastic rear cover, other than the two main fixing screws that hold it in place. I will follow your advice about loosening the two wires and flexing the plastic cover to see if I can get it off. The reason for removing it is because I see so much dust and particles in there that could cause problems with the correct working of the on/off switch. In any case, a service is not complete untill all elements have been attended to.

Hello everyone, thank you for your contribution, Ken. With tenacity and perseverance, I got the plastic cap off the back of the grinder! It looks as if the combination of plastic shrinkage with age and the ingression of dust and dirt makes the task more difficult.

I was able to clean out the switch and reassemble the back cover. After a commutator skim and new carbon brushes, she’s as good as new!
