Repair and disassembly guides for Samsung DVD players.

HT-F4500/2A DVD Player spins disk, outputs sound, but know video

This DVD player has always work fine until recently. Now if you put a DVD in (several have been tried) I can get sound output and the counter indicates that the DVD's are playing but I'm not getting any input to a monitor or TV via the HDMI connector (several HDMI cables have been tried). The monitor will indicate power is being passed to it when the DVD player is turned on and will occasionally a screen flash will appear briefly with no visible information.

The case has been opened and the HDMI connector appears to be solidly connected to the board.

Only issue I can recall that might have some bearing is that a Spectrum Tech was out to repair one of their Cisco cable boxes and additionally replaced a TiVo cable card (which he knew little about the TiVo box and didn't need replace), but to get to it he pulled both the TiVo and Samsung BlueRay/3D player out to swap the cable card, it's possible that he placed a strain on the HDMI cable at the time. I can't verify that the it was working before that, but do it hasn't worked since then

Any ideas on how to further trouble shoot this issue would be appreciated.

Hi @brian33038

Is the audio from a dvd disc being heard from a monitor or TV connected via HDMI or is it coming from speakers attached to the player?

Not sure as you also mentioned no video when connected to a monitor and a lot of monitors don't have speakers.

It makes a difference as speakers connected to the player get analogue audio signals from the player whilst with audio heard on devices connected via HDMI, it is a digital signal being sent from the player, so if it is not heard on the TV speakers then the problem could be further back in the player and not centred on the HDMI section. Just trying to isolate it more.

Have you visually inspected the socket side of the HDMI port connector with a magnifying glass and a strong light to check that all 19 pins are there, and are they're all straight and that some are not bent or missing?

In troubleshooting, the DVD player has been hooked to both the TV and a monitor to validate that the lacking video wasn't just the TV. While connected to the TV audio is available both through the TV speakers and speakers connected to DVD player, just depends on which one you choose.

HDMI socket was inspected, it appears that all 19 pins are in place and straight.

@brian33038 these issues seem to be more likely related to the HDMI port than with the laser assembly. I would try to get an inexpensive HDMI tester and connect that to see if you have proper pin output. It won't test signal but it can test connection.

Hi @brian33038

Easiest way to clean the laser lens is to purchase a lens cleaning kit and insert it as you would a normal disc.

Although since you can hear audio OK, no distortions, missing sections etc, then this verifies that the laser lens is working OK so this shouldn't be necessary.

There are no separate audio and video tracks on a disc. It's just bumps and dips etched into the surface which when scanned by the laser is interpreted as 1's and 0's which correlates to the data that is stored on the disc and that the DSP (digital signal processor) uses to know what to do.

Since the audio works digitally via HDMI, if the video is sent on a different TDMS channel(s) then it might be internal to the HDMI connector, so you may have to prove each pin electrically using an Ohmmeter to check that there's continuity between each pin connection on the board and each pin in the socket where the cable connects to it, in case there a fracture/break in the pin itself. (Scroll down to HDMI section in link).

If all the pins check out OK electrically, I can't find the service manual for your exact model but here's the service manual for the model series that may (or may not) help. Follow the No image on display troubleshooting flowchart as seen on p.23 (of 65 pdf)

this is likely an issue with the disc laser and optical sensor, I'd recommend cleaning the lenses with lint-free cleanroom wipers or foam lint-free q tips.

if this doesn't medaite the issue I'd next replace the disk reader module

Hi @adr_daniel

Just curious to know how there would still be audio heard from a dvd disc, if there's a problem with the laser sensor?

Cheers

DVD module has been removed from the unit, any chance there's a guide or manual for breaking down the DVD module to perform the cleaning? I've found the DVD Player Training manual for DVD-E234, which while similar to mine leaves room for questions.
