laptop won't power on after replacing the battery

I recently received a battery from ifixit, to replace the one that went out, so I thought. I replace it with the new battery and it won't power on. The fans kick in for a bit but that's pretty much it. Any suggestions?

Hi @annettebarnhart

Without turning the laptop on, does the laptop indicate that the battery is charging when the charger is connected?

If so, have you fully charged the battery?

Hi @annettebarnhart

Try a full power refresh and check if that resolves the problem, in case a corrupted BIOS is causing the problem.

Disconnect the charger if connected and then open the laptop and remove the main battery from the motherboard.

Unplug the RTC coin cell battery from the motherboard. Unfortunately for you it is located on the underside of the motherboard

Here's the service manual that will help. Go to p.33 to view the procedure to remove the coin cell battery.

Once the coin cell battery is removed, measure its voltage. If it is <2.5.V DC or if it is >4-5 years old, replace it. Search online for W6NPD to find suppliers that suit you best.

Reconnect the coin cell battery (or its replacement) and reassemble the motherboard etc into the laptop.

Reconnect the main battery and close the laptop.

Connect the charger and check if it turns on OK.

If it does there may be a message stating that the date and time are incorrect. This is normal as the BIOS has been reset back to its factory default state. Once the date and time have been corrected, the message won't appear again. Also if any user definable BIOS settings have been changed by you, to suit whatever system requirements you have, they will need to be changed back also.
