No bootable device available

This is a friends computer and I offered to help repair it. It had a failed hard drive so I opened it up and replaced it with a working one. Now after putting the cables back and turning it on the DVD and HD will not show when holding ALT/OPTION on boot. If I just let it boot with the Tiger OSX disk in I get a flashing question mark folder. If I try to hold C while booting it does nothing.

I have verified that all cables are plugged in and I kept the computer open while performing the tests to make sure that no cables were detached during assembly.

You have to format the HDD and install an operating system on it for it to boot. the flashing "?" means a valid System folder can not be found. If the proper Tiger install disk (or full install disk) is not used it will not boot the compter.

I think you have the right answer here, but let me ask why my DVD is not showing as a boot option? It is the official Tiger OSX 10.4.3 disk.

Check in your system profiler to see if your drive will read DVDs.

@mayer - it is a CD/DVD Combo drive -

The drive could be damaged, Option boot and see if you can select it. To use Mac OS X v10.4, your Macintosh needs:

* A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor

* Built-in FireWire

* At least 256 MB of RAM

* DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation

* At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools
