3ds XL only boots into recovery mode, no sound when it turns on

I tried to look everywhere for a way to fix this 3ds, I believe its a software issue but im not 100% sure. The 3DS doesnt seem to have CFW since I cant boot either to GM9 or Luma menu, and I think the 3ds is bricked somehow. I bought this online so I dont know its history, but I would appreciate if someone can guide me in the direction of a guide to unbrick a 3ds with these issues. Heres a video: https://youtube.com/shorts/TqxsZIedlFc?f...

Hi! Most of the time the firmware is corrupted. Can you post a video for us? Thanks!

Hi Juan!

Thanks for the video! It is semi bricked! Please try the following method: https://www.reddit.com/r/3DS/comments/ol...

Otherwise you need to check the EMMC on the motherboard! Replacing this should fix it, but is hard to do. You could also replace the motherboard, but this will be expensive.

Thanks for the response.

So, I tried both the LRStart and the LRSelect and even all at the same time but it wouldnt to anything. Now im looking online for how to check the EMMC on the motherboard but I dont know how. I can probably replace it since I have experience soldering and I've been working on 3Ds for a while now, I just need to know how.

Hi Juan!

Here you need to check Step 14: Nintendo 3DS Teardown

Please check the following IC: Toshiba THGBM2G3P1FBAI8 2 GB NAND Flash

You probably need to replace this one with a hot air station and place a new one on it. Not sure where you can find the part :(. Best thing to do is to find a donor (broken) motherboard with a different issues and get the NAND from there! This is difficult, but since you have experience, it should be doable!

Good luck and let us know how it goes :)!

@dan0 Hey,

I recently purchased a "Parts/Repair" 2DSXL. I'm actually in the exact same boat as the OP and I'm starting to think taking that chip from another card might be the route I need to take. I think the most frustrating part is that the Recovery (L+R+UPdpad+A) works well and proves the Buttons/Screens/WiFi all work, but I guess it's just missing it's firmware(NAND)?

Thanks for your response

Hi Dean! If you are able to get in through recovery, you might want to update the firmware/software and see how that goes :)! Otherwise you probably do need to replace the NAND...

@dan0 Hey! Thanks for the response!

When I do the recovery, it just says that the system is up to date and then shuts off. Then, attempting to turn it on normally repeats the cycle of: Blue light, Black screens. Not even a backlight.

Also, I realized the guide picture you referenced was for the 3DS, and the 2DS has a different motherboard. I was curious if you have any sources to find a chip breakdown like the link you sent, but for the 2DS XL Motherboard? Or any way to identify the NAND chip on this console? I will be looking online for it as well.

Thanks!

I just had this EXACT problem yesterday. My 3DS had never been hacked, and this happened randomly after powering it off and on. I stumbled upon your question in pursuit of answers. I kept searching, and I found a post on gbatemp where this “soft brick” was described. In my case, it was was the “gamecoin” brick. I had to hack my 3DS to remove a corrupted file, and then it worked perfectly again. I hope this helps fix yours. Good luck.
