Magsafe LED blinks Amber once and then shuts off, does not charge.

  • When I plug my charger in it quickly blinks amber and then goes out and will not charge the battery.
  • The first battery charge indicator LED blinks green suggesting it needs a charge.
  • I have used working battery and charger from the exact same model (Mom's), with the same results.
  • My battery works/charges in her machine.
  • Computer turns on when MagSafe is connected
  • Had not been taken apart before it stopped charging

I have repaired many macbooks with the same or similar problems. Sometimes the macbook wont recognize the battery. Symptoms can include the following:

When you plug in the charger the LED on the magsafe will have abnormal behavior like the LED will be a dull green instead of the normal bright green you see when the battery is fully charged. When the macbook is turned on the fans will be on at full speed and noisy. Monitoring Apps or widgets like iStat pro will not recognize or display temperatures from temp sensors. If you use the macbook without a charger the macbook works but the battery icon on the top right of the desktop will have an "X" through it. The macbook will freeze when you open up apps. When you quit apps they still stay on the dock and show up as still running.

Here are some things I have done to fix theses problems on some macbooks:

  • Disconnect removable devices from the macbook such as USB drives, firewire drives etc.
  • Remove any discs from the superdrive.
  • Disconnect the charger.
  • Remove the battery.
  • Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds.
  • Connect the charger while still holding the power button, keep holding the power button for 10 seconds. (Note: This must be done WITHOUT THE BATTERY)
  • Turn the macbook on and immediately press and hold command+option+P+R keys. Release the keys when you hear the apple chime sound 3 or 4 times. (must be done before you see the white screen at start up)
  • Shut off the macbook when you get to the login screen or the desktop.
  • While the macbook is OFF press and hold Command+Option+Left Shift+ Power Button for 5 seconds. The sleep LED will go crazy and you might hear a loud tone coming from the speakers. Press the power button one more time to restart the macbook.
  • Again shut off the computer and remove the charger.
  • Install the battery and try to turn on the macbook.
  • Check to see if the battery will charge now and if the macbook will recognize the battery.

If doing all these things does not work then there is one more thing that you can do that has worked for me in the past BUT I AM WARNING YOU, IT IS DANGEROUS SO TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK.

  • Remove the charger.
  • Remove the battery.
  • Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds.
  • While still holding the power button connect the charger.
  • While still holding the power button and the charger is plugged in connect the battery. (you might need a second person to help you hold the battery in place while you turn the lock with a coin)
  • If the LED on the magsafe turns bright green then the problem is solved and the macbook is recognizing the battery again.

If this still doesn't work then I suspect that the magsafe board is faulty.

Xnriqux, quick question when performing the above, should the macbook be shut down or do up and running? Thank you.

Awesome! The first steps with the removal of the battery worked on my 2012 MacBook Pro. Thank you so much for the detailed info.

xnriqux - Thank you I will try these steps today and report my results.

Kathy - Were you still under the Apple Care plan when you brought your machine in? This machine is almost 6 years old and I didn't think they would even look at it.

Edit: I ordered a new Magsafe charger and it is working for now. I looked at my old charger nad one of the pins was mashed down inside of the adapter. I don't understand why it would not charge with my Mom's charger. I will edit this post once the battery charges to verify that this is what fixed it.

I don't think it is under Apple Care (I believe it had expired). Like I said, this was under their "Quality Program." It's worth a try taking it in. If it turns out they'll replace it, you can return the one you purchased.

I had a similar problem recently, so I took it to the Apple Store. Turns out it's a known problem. Under their "Quality Program" they replaced my power adapter free of charge! The Genius even suggested I bring in my old T-type adapter to see if it was covered. Still need to do that :)

I've been working with an Early '08 Core2Duo White MacBook that a very good friend gave to me a week ago. It would only work with the power cord as the battery in it was original and, I'm sure, long dead. Got a new battery for it a few days ago and ran it through a few charge/discharge cycles and all seemed well. Never worked with a MacBook before, so I thought that the connector's light going from bright green or orange to the dim green was a power saving feature.

Tonight, after having it plugged in for a couple hours, I looked and the battery was showing a low percentage of charge for as long as it had been connected. I wiped both connectors with isopropyl and began to go through XnriquX's procedure but was stopped when on connecting the charger the laptop wasn't getting power. Dim green light but wouldn't start up.

On inspecting the cable connector I could make out that one of the pins in the center had slid down into the plastic housing. A few taps on the table and there it was out again. I played with it for a while connected to the MacBook to see if rocking the connector a little would work. (During this I saw the connector's dim light go from its usually steady green to a dim green/orange flashing of short duration. This happened twice.) I finally got a steady bright green light and was able to power up. I installed the battery, connected the charger and again got a bright green that switched to a bright orange for about 30-45 seconds and went to dim green. I checked both System Profiler > Power and System Preferences > Energy Saver and both are telling me the battery is charging with this steady dim green light. Just did a quick check and still charging, with a dim green light. Looks like a "mostly hit, sometimes miss" situation until I decide to replace the charger. Curiouser and curiouser.

Thanks for the great web site and all the sharing that goes on here. Its enabled me to get to know my new MacBook with its various problems and just as varied solutions from the knowledgeable folks here. I also appreciate all of the guides that are available here. I know I'll have to go inside the MacBook to see if I can cure the optical drive of its inability to eject a disc. Cheers
