Non-working sleep/lock button on my iPod touch

Non-working sleep/lock button

It seems like no one have had this problem before. I've done a lot of research, but i couldn't find a site that could help me. I've had my iPod for exactly one year, and about a week ago I dropped it from about 1 foot (30 cm). After that happened I checked if everything was working, and it was. The next day the lock button didn't work.

It looks like it's crushed and it wont come out. It is stuck inside the aluminium housing. What can I do to fix this?

Felix, I converted your comment to an answer. All you have left to do is to accept it. this way, everyone knows what worked for you. Any other answer will now only be a guess since we will not know what worked:-). Good job...

When you push down the outside sleep/lock button, on the inside their is a shiny thin round piece of metal that causes the round on/off "button" on the flex cable to toggle on and off.

The sleep/lock button at the top right of the iPod touch 4 has a flex cable inside which is wrapped around a piece of metal held in by two screws. If you carefully, without tearing the flex cable, remove it from the inside you will see that under the plastic power button (the one you press on top of the ipod, but on the inside) you will see the thin shiny rectangular with rounded ends piece of metal.

You should be able to push the silver looking round metal piece back UP into place and seat it properly under the bottom of the sleep/lock button.

It sounds confusing, but take a look and you can figure it out pretty quickly.

If the ipod was dropped severely and the back casing is really dinged in, you may need to get someone to transfer everything over to a new back case. This requires experience and soldering skills.

You should take it to an apple store and see if they can do anything about it but it may cost you a fair amount of money so another option is to go into settings tap on general then acessibility and scroll down until you find assistive touch click on it and then turn it on you will see a little black square you can move that around and put it anywhere on your screen it can get annoying but you will get use to it if you click on it then press devise then lock screen it will turn it off if you hold it you have the option to power it off and if you decide to you will have to plug it into the main devise to turn on your iPod back on.

Felix,

You might consider to replace the crushed sleep/lock button.

Which generation of iPod is it? I know that the iPod touch 4G does not have such a sleep/lock button. So you must have an older version.

In any case, I think the only way to replace this button is by disassembling the iPod.

However, I can only speak on the basis of my experience with an iPhone 3G that I completely had to disassemble in order to get to the volume/sleep button. So I don't know if you actually have to disassemble the whole device before you can remove the crushed sleep/lock button and built in a new one.

I hope this helps.

Steffen

What do you mean by the iPod does not have a sleep/lock button? It is a 32GB version if that helps. Thanks for answering!

This was a lot of help (hopefully). I plan on replacing my own screen and along with it my stuck and unusable lock button. Thanks.

Also, Steffen, I doubt you know anything about electronics. All iPods and iPhones (and iPads) of every generation have a lock button on top. Please don't confuse people, it's rude.

So, today, I opened an app that I created, because it has a fun jigsaw puzzle game on it. When I finished making the puzzle, suddenly my iPod touch would not return to home screen, lock, or shut down. So basically it can't do anything, except play the jigsaw puzzle again. And it will get dark, but it still won't lock. I don't have the money to buy a new one, and I left it on the charger for a while.

I also can't afford to have Apple take a look at it, or get it fixed. And even if it was free, the Apple store is far away from my location. Help!
