Repair guides and support for televisions manufactured by Sony.

Sony Bravia XR-65X90J, Four blinking red lights

My TV shows no picture at all, When I try to turn it on I hear some clicks and then I get four red blinking lights code, I have searched for a service manual for this model, but I can't find one.

I think I can test and replace boards myself (with some guidance) if I know which one is faulty.

Thank you all in advance.

Update 6/8/2024

After a bit of hunting I found the service manual for my model TV.

Here is the link: https://research.encompass.com/SON/rr/XR...

I followed this troubleshooting diagram for the 4x blinking code, but I am getting different results with voltage readings when the TV is booting up, or TV on but blinking 4 times, or off in standby mode.

In other words I get the 3.3V or the 0V at both testing points at different power states of the TV.

So my question is, when am I supposed to be reading these voltages?

While it is booting up, after is has booted and is blinking the code, or plugged in but off in standby mode?

@volvo142rally 4 blink code is an LED driver failure/LED voltage protection. This happens if your backlight strips have failed. It also happens when there is a panel error and it does not communicate with the rest of the TV, which is possibly a bad main board. Since your TV is a Sony and they have had issues with the backlights, that would be my first step.

There is a way of bypassing the 4 blink error but it is a bit different from main board to main board. We really would need to see your boards to possibly help you with a temporary bypass so you could at least check your back lights etc.

It's an Android TV so try this as well. Unplug you TV. Push and hold the power button for about a minute. Now let go of the power button. Next hold the power button and the volume down button at the same time. While you hold those buttons down plug your TV in. It's a bit cumbersome so you may have to try a couple of times. Let us know what happens.

@volvo142rally try to bypass teh BL ERR circuit. Disconnect the wire (Pin 1 on your connector is teh one that corresponds to BL_ERR) from teh connector. Usually those are held in place by little plastic tabs. A small needle and lifting the tab usually frees teh wire. Then you connect that to either ground on you connector (if you have a free opening or you can connect it to ground by connecting it to the metal cover of the display panel). That will bypass the signal for the BL_ERR and should allow you to turn your TV on. If it does, you may notice dark spots on your screen etc. which will be coming from the failed LED's that are responsible for this error to begin with.

Let us know if this works out for you. Most Sony's are good with the ground connection but on some models this may not work.

I have uploaded pictures of the boards.

Also I have tried the factory reset multiple times, it always ends up with the blinking 4 red code.

@volvo142rally sorry to ask. Can you take some close-ups of the two connectors for the motherboard etc, including the legend (first image, top right connectors)? That way we can figure out how to attempt to block the error reporting.

さんによる

@oldturkey03 Close-up uploaded, is that the only board you need a close-up of?

I checked all the voltages in that legend, they all seem good while it's booting up.

The bypass did not work for me, it still goes to the 4 red code.

Weirdly one of the many times I tried grounding the BL ERR all the back lights came on for a short time, but I could never repeat those results.

I don't know where to go from here.

Hello, I have the same tv model with the same four blinking code error code. I tried to do the bl error bypass trick. But I am still getting the same 4 blinking errors. Have you been able to fix your tv?

I had to have all the backlights replaced

@volvo142rally replacing the backlights fixed this?

さんによる

Yes, I took it to a shop and they replaced all of the LED strips and it has been fine ever since.

Unfortunately for me I am unable to physically bring my tv into a repair shop to have the LED backlights replaced. In the past, I have been able to get the TV to come back on after having the TV unplugged for at least 8 hours. Only thing is, if I turn the TV off, I have to go thru the whole waiting 8 hours to get it to turn back on. So I need a technician to come to my house and replace whatever needs replacing, as I will not get a new TV, I love watching my 3D movies in the comfort of my own home and have quite a collection. I am going to try calling SONY directly to find a service technician. At least now I know what to tell them, thanks guys.

@volvo142rally I would like to know how to replace the LED strips. I can't figure out how to remove the black panel.
